my 86 4x4 is having a head light issue. so heres whats going on. had to drive home from work last night with my HID fog lights on cuz the head lights wouldnt come on. checked all the fuses, none blown. checked the wires from the back of the bulb and they were frine. all my other lights work, just no hi or low beams at this moment, so i took the batery out to check the some more of the wiring. after i put the batery back in, i have high beams, but the hi-beam indicator light doesnt come on. still no low beams. does any one have an idea?

 

Please be more specific about what you checked and the method used. It makes it easier if we know what has been done already.

They can't of been fine or the lights would have been on right
or the bulbs are dead/failing.

Going to guess there is something wrong with the switch. FSM BE-19

 

ok so i checked the fuses and relays under the driver side dashboard. they all were good and relays all clicked like they should when activated. all the fuses under the hood by the battery were good as well and the relay there with them clicks when i turn on the head lights. so im guessing the problem is some where between that relay and the headlights them selfs. i did also turn on the head lights and pulled the relay under the hood and it did click when i plugged it back in. but still no head lights. the hazards, blinkers, park lights and dash lights all still work and function properly.

 

Shouldn't be a problem with the switch if the relays are working. Can mark that off the list
Probe for ground at the headlamp plugs, and relays.

Make sure the connectors fit tight and are clean on the lamps, maybe someone swaped em out and cleaned off the electric grease so they're corroded.

 

Hmm only grounds i know about are the one off the battery to the body and block to the body. It did get new bulbs back in august and i used fresh grease on the plugs. It also did get a new engine and efi to carb swap about 2500 miles ago. And never had an issue with anything untill 2 nights ago when my head lights just stopped coming on...

I still dont know why the high beam indicator light still wouldnt come on even if the high beams arnt working....

 

You have an electrical problem. While using all of your senses (relay clicks) is admirable, you need a multimeter. It's not like they cost anything. http://www.harborfreight.com/7-funct...ter-98025.html (I still remember what I paid for my first digital meter ....)

The wiring is not 100% intuitive (the high-beam indicator is powered through the low-beam bulb filament) so you have to measure systematically. Pull off the headlamp connector, and check for continuity (ohms) on each filament. Then check for voltage between the connector pins, and then to ground, on each pin. Last, check for voltage from each connector pin to 12v; the headlamps are switched on the ground side so you need to do this step to check for "ground."

My money is on the dimmer switch. co_94_pu has provided you with the manual.

And the dimmer switch, thats not the same one on the steering collum is it? Or is that he same as the headlamp switch?

 

Think he means the headlight dimmer switch, don't think the interior dimmer has any effect here. So yeah headlamp switch, or whatever the books gong to call it
