Engine swap question 22rec -> 22R? +auto trans?
I have a 85 4x4 with dead 22REC. It sounds like a broken wristpin or rod. I am looking for a used engine to drop in, However i see more 22R engines avalible..cheaper too. Can i drop a 22r into a 22rec truck? Would i need a different transmission control module? Are the 22r engines for manual trans only? Are there any other easy engine swaps? V6 maybe?

i have an 89 22re 4x4 and it originally had a 5speed but the owner swapped it out with an auto (which is a slug to drive even with 4.88 gears). a friend of mine that owns my previous 95 22re 4x4 wants to trade transmissions because he hates shifting. NOW MY QUESTION IS THIS: i know that if we swap that the only wiring i should have to do is jump the park sensor wires together, but as far as putting my auto in his what do i have to do about my wiring? my auto has the 3 solenoids in it. i cant find squat on people putting autos in manuals so PLEASE HELLLLLLPPPP!!!! do we have to swap computers or what wires do i have to give him without screwing up my truck?!?!i need to know asap as i am doing this friday

I know a few generalities on this, but nothing more specific. The blocks on the 22r series changed in (I think) 85. There is no difference between the 22r and 22re blocks. As long as the engine you have and the engine you get are both early,or late blocks, all of your FI will bolt right up. So basically, use the long block you get and use the manifolds and acceseries from your existing engine. Search a little for more specific details like when the blocks changed and how to tell the difference.
Also, I don't think the tranny cares if the engine is carbed or FI. The tranny has it's own computer. There might be a few sensors that give input to the tranny.
Good luck!

Ok it sounds like as long as it is a "Laser" block, I am good for the swap. Looks like the heads are the same also. I haven’t torn it down yet. I am hoping there was no piston strike on the valves. I'll find out tomorrow.
Thanks on the transmission module info. For some reason I thought it was all controlled by the ECU.
I found some helpful info on block and heads here: http://www.lcengineering.com/LCTechP...TechNote49.htm

I finally got it apart. Broken rod.
I am thinking about putting a 20r in it to get it going again. I can find 20rs pretty cheap around here. But i cant find one with a auto flywheel. Is is safe to swap flywheel from a 22re onto a 20r? Or would there be balance problems?
