Random starter failure

About 1 outa 5 times the starter in my 86 just doesn't work. You turn the key, and just hear a click from the starter, that's it.

I think the battery is good. Any ideas on what this may be? The guy I just bought it from recently replaced the starter, and alternator.

Check all connection and ground points. Then have battery load tested. Then possibly starter relay, starter, ignition switch, etc.

Check the voltage at the starter signal wire. Often it barely puts out enough volts to engage the solenoid. I've rigged a relay using that wire to make sure the starter gets a full 12v at the solenoid.

Vital22re, I'll check that. How did you rig up a relay like that?
