Question 85 22re power without touching the bottom end?

hello, so over the course of the next month or so i am going to be putting a new head, timing cover, timing chain and all new gaskets into my 85 22re engine,
what i have

a soon to be cleaned, ported and polished 22re head (new valve seals)
long tube header

and thats about it for aftermarket stuff.....

I want to make a little bit more power to turn my 35" tires. i have 4.52 gearing front and rear and the truck does highway speeds fine and its awesome in the bush but the 100hp kinda bugs me. Anything i can do to the engine to try and get it a bit more peppy? mainly low end power. engine has 225,000km on it. 135psi of compression in all 4 cyl. 150psi wet. bottom end checks out fine. truck runs awesome but a little on the rich side due to a bad o2 sensor. i dont want to adjust compression ratio or really touch the bottom end. i have another bottom end to do that to later on.

i don't believe in turbo's or superchargers, i know a cam would help, i believe a rv cam would benifit the low end power band. but i want more than a measly 15-20hp gain. i want this engine to make 140-150hp at the crank. without redlining it.... i dont know if what i ask is impossible or if someone has done it.

the header is on the truck, this is why it isnt in the pic

You mean 4.56's, and why dont you believe in super chargers, or turbo's? Those are really your only way to gain real power without touching the bottom end. And gearing lower will be the biggest gain with 35's. Something like 5.29's.

It takes a lot of work to get 150 hp out of a 22r. Don't think you are going to get there with just minor head work.

Cam, intake battery swap, Supra AFM, ported TB, header, e-fan swap. Clean and port intake manafold.
This should get you closer to your goal.

With forced induction, you have to touch your bottom end. Low compression pistons for boost.

To the OP, how can you not believe in forced induction??

If you have 135psi across all cylinders, and get 150psi wet, it sounds to me like its time for a rebuild, and you'll pick up a bunch of power with just a fresh bottom end. Gears, cam, supra AFM, throttle body, don't get a massive exhaust.

Red face

you go ahead and put a brand new head on a old bottom end you will be putting the bottom end together in a matter of time.

These Toyota`s don`t like a new head and the added compression on a tired bottom end.

You say the bottom end looks fine so when you pulled the mains and rods to inspect put new bearings in??

What is not to like about forced induction Perhaps you just don`t understand it

You want low speed torque do double cases

The 22R series of engines builds power in the head oversize valves port and polish . improve the exhaust header to a 2.25 " from the header back'

Even the stock turbo set up gets you about 40 horse power.

After this it gets real expensive real quick.

Polish a turd all you want, you're just going to end up with shiny turd. These 22REs are a lot of things, but powerful isn't one of them. Love it for what it is or drop a couple thou into a motor swap.

It might help if you were running the right gearing for those meats.

hmm. well i don't like forced induction because they arnt built for it and i beleve they belong on v8's and rice rockets. this is a toyota pickup truck on 35"s with 8" of lift....not ment to be fast at all.

oh before i forget.... i am cheap
well cheap with this engine i have a stroker project sitting on my deck under tarps garbage bags and a bit of grease. but thats a ways down the road.

i realize 150hp is a far cry without a turbo. ive done some more research and if i port, polish the head, vac test the valves, double roller timing chain, performance cam and some cleaning/computer work i can get 120 hp maby. and the gearing i am running is good for these tires, does 120km/h fairly easily. i know that the head on the truck itself is kindof buggerd between drilled out holes and broken bolts its garbage. the other head i have is out getting fitted up for a good clean and polish. i relize they arnt a power house and i dont really want it too be, its a reliable little turd engine.

as a side note i had 5.29's in it, the truck chewd them up and spat them out.. costed me 1200 bucks for the set and they were garbage. the 4.56's are good, both on and off road. i think my truck is only making 60hp at the moment. due to a couple wiring issues and o2sensor blah blah blah. i know the cylinders are plugged up pretty good so im just going to do a good clean. should improve the engine up a bit. i just want to get reliable small increase of power from this old girl. i will try everyones suggestions. and let you know how it goes. going to be spending the next while in the junk yard pulling parts lol.

Then why are you trying to make it have more power at all?

You either bought cheap gears or they were set up wrong. And no 4.56 is the wrong gear for 35's and 22re.

Rebuild the motor and get 4.88's or 5.29's and it will be sweet.

People put 100K plus on 5.29's with no problems.

well i bought yukon gears, set up professionally at national 4wd. followed break in procedure to the letter and it tore up the pinion in the rear...... i got new gears for 400 bucks

so i went with that instead. thinking maby dual t-cases or re gear trans?

i am trying to do this on a budget.

if a bit of power cant be done... then i will bite the bullet and do a top to bottom rebuild. i am going to try cleaning out the carbon, re wiring the engine properly....( the last dude that owned it kinda f#$%@# up the wiring....) performance cam, maby remove pistons and hone
put new rings in her. i'll see. trying to do all this for under 500 bones. for now....

do you think a fresh rebuild would bring it back to life a bit?

i spent all my money on my last vehicle.... a jeep

sense your name says 85 im assuming your efi but if you want 150hp why not just go with the hybrid head setup with dual side draft carbs amd like a 268 cam with a port and polished head with O/S valves and the header you should make 150 easy with that setup. you could use a more radical cam but i dont know as if it would give you good power down low. my celica has the 270 cam and is kind of a dog till you hit around 2000 rpm then its just power all the way to 7000rpm. from a money standpoint though a hybrid head and dual side drafts arent cheap, duals run atleast $1200

The best way i heard it is simply this: " ...so you have a mouth full of rotten teeth and you only get dentures for the top". That's for putting a new head on a tired bottom end. I've done just about everything I can to my 22re keeping it NA. I've got 5k on a fresh bottom end: 10-10 crank and .040 over, the rest is in the sig. There's nothing more i can do before needing to switch to a stand alone ECU. I'm still in 3rd gear at 4k going up hills at 60 mph. It's just one of those things.

was it worth it to do all the work? i have another bottom end ready for rebuild along with block. but i dont want to put 1200-2000 bones into it only to be disappointed. hence why i am trying a cheaper option.

draft carbs would.. well not work for me as i enjoy water..... and yes its efi. i am going to try a cam with a good clean and hone. see if it brings some more life into it

Your struggling to get 150hp, and people say the 3vz-e is a bad motor.

I didnt think the 22R-E had different pistons then a 22R-TE.
Its funny even the 22R-TE only produces 135HP. And hes tryin to get 150HP without any forced induction. Better of with just gearing it right. IMO

Yeah the pistons are different. 22RTE makes 135 from the factory, but is capable of making wayyyyy more than that when you use a good turbo, megasquirt, and all the goodies.

140-150 hp can be made from a 22RE if you build it right:

http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...fpart=all&vc=1

I'm still confused by what you want out of your rig. You talk about wanting more power, stroker kit, etc, but then you're also talking about dual cases and gears. You shouldn't be having any real power problems off road, low gear gives you more power than you'll need. An extra 20 horses on your top end isn't really going to help you when you're wheeling.

youre all about that 3rz lol. and yeah thatd be a good idea, but gearing is probably the best thing to do, find a set of 4.88s. your tires are too big for what you have. i have 32s and 4.10s and the thing is a turd. i imagine it feels alot like yours. it does highway speeds fine, but theres hardly any acceleration.
