changing fuel filter, depressurize fuel system?

I was reading my Haynes manual on how to change the fuel filter and it says I need to depressurize the fuel system before working on it ('88 4Runner 22RE)

It says to disconnect a wire on the fuel pump with the engine running to do this. It seems like the fuel pump is pretty hard to get to, is there an easier way? A fuse maybe?

I've never bothered to depressurize the system before starting. Seems to me, slowly opening the fuel lines at the fuel filter is sufficient to depressurize the system. I do open the fuel cap before starting too.

Thanks for the response.. Any tips on getting to the FF? Book says its underneath the intake manifold. Do I need to remove that?

Disconnect the battery as fuel can drip down on starter. There is an access plate that can be removed to get to the filter a little easier. I find each truck has a different way to access it.

I can get the back bolt of the filter from over the fender in between firewall and filter. It is a tight fit. Dont need to remove the intake. Removing starter can help, but I dont remove it.

And, work on a cold engine with a cold exhaust.

Alright thanks for the help guys. Once I find the filter I'll disconnect the battery and put something under the FF so fuel can drip out safely

Factory procedure for depressurization is to put rag on cold start injector and loosen it from intake manifold.
