Check engine light went off and truck won't run right
Hi, I'm new to the forums and fairly new to Toyotas. I have a 1989 4x4 Truck with the 22re in it. The check engine light and brake light on the dash has always been on and it has always ran fine. Two days ago I was out hillclimbing and the battery cable came undone. When I hooked it back up and started it the truck started missing terribly. The check engine light and brake light are now off and the tachometer is stuck at 7,000. I think that maybe my problem is with a loose wire somewhere, I just don't know where. Any help would be appreciated.

I would still try and pull the codes it may have cleared the codes but worth a shot. When your battery was bouncing around, the fusible link goes from the battery to the fusebox. It making a good contact?

I don't have a code reader and I don't know anyone nearby who does. I have another question. I pulled the EFI fuse and it still runs the same. Should it do that? I would think that it wouldn't run at all without the EFI fuse.

You don't use a code reader on OBD1 Toyotas, only tool you need to get codes is a jumper wire or a paper clip.

Ok, I tried to get a code today and the check engine light would not come on even when I was trying to run the test. When I turn the key on, the only light that lights up on the dash is the seat belt light. What do I need to get power to to get the other lights to light up when I turn on the key like it used to?

Yes I know I am jumping the right diagnostic terminals. The check engine light won't come on at all when I turn the key on and neither will the "Brake Failure" light. The only dash light that comes on is the one for seat belts.

Start with your grounds. There might be a short somewhere near your battery where the wires go into the fuse box and stuff. I believe there is a hot and ground on that side. Especially since u said it started when your battery cable came undone. Maybe the hot is grounding out somewhere.

just the fact it ran with the EFI fuse removed means you have some serious wiring problems.
Are you sure that was the fuse you pulled??
With the EFI fuse removed no power to the ECU which means it should not start crank yes but no spark or fuel.
see if you can get your hands on the electrical manual for that year
I hope you have friends good with electrical trouble shooting or your gonna be real good till you have this all sorted out.
