22re or 2rz?
alright well after the sale of my built 86 im starting to look for something a little more road worthy while still being about to trail ride and deer hunt as my redneck self likes to do, found A 1992 pickup, reg cab 5 speed, 22re. rebuilt motor, looks to be in nice shape but dang he wants 5k for it!
he said he would be willing to move on the price a good bit but not to low ball him (im thinking 3800)

but in the same craigslist sitting i found a 96 tacoma, 2rz motor, 5 speed 4x4, he wants 4800 but hes firm, not willing to move at all, doesnt even want to talk cash, it has 180k org miles and it scares me, i would hate for it too need a timing chain, (or are these belts?) 6 months after owning it

now my question to the yotatech community is this? rebuilt 22re? or 180k org 2rz? i know my way around a 22re a little more but at the same time the 2rz offers more power and somewhat better fuel economy then the 22re,
i will be buying a new rig within the next few weeks so new links to new rigs are encouraged

why does the 4x4 Tacoma have a 2RZ in it? That is a 2.4L found in 2WD's. I was always under the impression the 4x4's had the 2.7 3RZ..my 97 4x4 taco had the 3RZ.
My neighbor's 99 Taco has over 330K on a 3RZ and hasn't skipped a beat.
they are both high mileage used trucks with out a warranty...just because the 92 has a recently rebuilt engine doesn't mean it was rebuilt right...I would go for the Taco

You have cycled quite a few vehicles in the last few years just what are you looking for.:jessica::jessica:
I drove a Tacoma with the 2RZ i liked my 22REC better till I got the 3.4 and found I had to have another one.
I have no clue what your emissions laws are like but ours here anything up to 1996 is just a visual inspection.
When the OBD2 started it then gets hooked up to the computer and the state gets all your info like having a black box.
The 2Rz has a timing chain just like the 22REC
At this point it would come down to just what the 22rec rebuilt means it means different things to different people
One listing a few years ago said new engine what they failed to mention was it was installed 90,000 miles ago.
another one 3.0 said head gaskets just done!! That was 50,000 miles ago.
another rebuilt engine one was just installing new gaskets!!
I really don`t think any of these things were done trying to scam anyone these people were all just clueless.
You need to come vacation in the cool weather of Pa and learn what real rust is.
Good luck in your search!1
off to work to hold someones hand!!:jessica:

2RZ(2.4L) came in 2wd Tacos. 3RZ(2.7L) came in 4wd Tacos, 2wd or 4wd Runners, and Prerunners.
Excellent engine. I would lean towards the Taco, unless your willing to eventually swap a 3RZ into the older truck... That's fun stuff.

wasnt wanting to swap, the truck has to reliable enough to drive on the interstate between pensacola and nashville every couple of weeks, didnt know about the differences between the 2rz and the 3rz, i called the 92 and he said it was the whole motor that was rebuilt, new rings, pistons, bearings, honed, blah blah blah, as far as 3rz goes when are they normally due for a timing chain?

been talking to the owner about the tacoma, got him down to 4400, hes owned it 5 years, he bought it with 102k miles, its been regularly serviced and garaged kept since hes owner it, never been offroad except once to dump some brush, and has locked it in 4wd twince just to make sure it worked, going monday to pick it up! he sent me a bunch of picks an it looks really clean!

The issues with the 3RZ engine mainly is the balance shaft. If the oil isnt changed regularly, and a good quality oil isnt used for that 3-5k mile oil change schedule, the rear bearing of the balance shaft gets starved of oil and will seize.
The balance shaft is there for the long stroke of the 3RZ, making it smoother for a better in-cab feeling. The balance shafts have a seperate smaller chain to drive them. Some guys just A) remove the chain altogether, or B) install a LCE Performance balance shaft delete kit. But the majority of us leave it functional. The ones that do remove/delete the shafts say that the engine is still smooth though.
The timing chain CAN wear, but I don't know of any regular scheduled replacement intervals. It's a dual row chain so it's pretty strong.
I'm sure you will be happy with the Taco/Coma. I see a SAS in the future...? Good luck!!
By the way, on the driver side, right behind the alternator, it will have 3RZ cast into the block if you wanted to verify. The 2RZ, again, came in 2wd tacos, and is lower on torque/HP, but likes to rev. The 3RZ is 150hp/180 tq, and is more of a grunt motor, a torque monster.

wont be SASing this one for awhile, its going to be with me through college for atleast 2 years, the few things as planned
1. ARB front bumper for protection
2. peel and seal the cab for insulation and road noise, (it will see alot of interstate driving)
3. cb for road communication and overall useage
4. sr5 bucket seats and console
i called and asked him if it was better sunday to pick it up, which it will be, the trucks been garaged kept alot of its life and has had regular upkeep, it sent me a TON of underneath photos and under engine photos, it looks very well kept and very clean
