High mileage maintenance
I am currently deployed and purchased a 93 4runner 3.0L before I left with 176,000 miles on it. I have replaced the alternator, battery, and belt prior to leaving. Other than the obvious oil change, what fluids, filters, etc should be replaced? Also, while on a cold motor, the transmission shifts hard as hell out of 1st and 2nd (auto trans). Once the motor has warmed up, everythings fine. Any clarification on this? Thanks guys and I love this website.

anytime I deploy (well, when I was single anyway), I make sure to leave it with a full tank of gas, disconnect battery...
I would for sure have the tranny fluid flushed/changed and all the other drive train fluids (front/rear diff fluid, T-case, grease all zerks, etc..)
and welcome to the forum!

Thanks guys, the only fluids that have been changed on it is the motor oil. The dude I purchased it from said the only thing he ever replaced on the vehicle was the radiator, and I also noticed he did a super job zip-tieing an electric fan to it also. Thanks for the replies guys

pull the radatior out, get one out of a manual trans 4runner, and get a hayden trans cooler seperate from your radiator, as for fluids, oil, trans fluid, gear lube, air filter, fuel filter, trans filter and oil filter, then run a can of seafoam through the intake,

Yes sir, I will check that out. Thank you. How much of a task is the trans filter change?
seafoam, Ive heard dudes say its amazing, and others say it murders the motor. Have you used this stuff before? After the 200 hundred youtube videos and million forum posts it seems to be an awesome product. The couple dudes that said it was sketchy steered me away though.

I've had good luck with Seafoam. And Redline products as well. I presume this is the same truck your wife 4Lowed all day? Change your drivetrain fluids, separate tranny cooler from radiator, timing belt & water pump and all components for that job, wife 4hi/4lo schooling and you should be rocking!
Until the head gaskets blow... Then you'll be ready to do a 3.4 swap!!

The trans filter is a metal screen held in a frame. Most of the time it can be cleaned with something like brake cleaner and completely dried before reinstalling.
For me, the time consuming thing was getting the old FIPG cleaned off the tranny and pan. It's not a hard job, IMO, but is a bit messy.
The FSM has all the torque specs you will need.
