Problems with 22RE! IAC? TPS? Wonky idle/dying

Hey guys, first off i would like to say thanks for looking at my post. If i posted in the wrong area i apologize as i'm not used to this forum yet. I hail from the rx7 club and this is slightly new for me.

I'll get right to the point.

1985 4runner. 22RE (efi) all stock except suspension

Problem: She starts and runs fine, but as soon as i give it some gas she sputters and rpm drops drastically. if i give it a lot of gas she dies. If i ease into the throttle it lasts a little longer before it sputters and dies. Now i didn't have this problem until we got some seriously cold weather just the other day. Also something else to note is that when it's at operating temp the idle fluctuates when i step on the brake. But when i'm not on the brake it idles fine, a little higher than normal but idles smoothly. Brake = wonky idle. No brake = smooth/high idle.

Personally im thinking it's my idle air control or my throttle position sensor. Does anyone know if those two parts i listed are prone to going on these trucks? Any help would be much appreciated

You might want to give your intake a nice cleaning. Cleaning out the black gook will improve airflow and cure a host of evil behaviors. Take your time, take it apart and do it right. A can of Seafoam is good but not the whole answer.

The brake uses vacuum, if it acts up when you step on it, it might be be a bad diaphragm in the booster letting all your vacuum pressure escape.

I've checked all my lines and they check out okay. I'll check out the brake booster though. That never crossed my mind. As far as my intake she's pretty spotless, i cleaned it when my fuel pump died a few weeks back =P

I did however order a tps.. Let me tell you, not cheap lol. I was thinking that with the amount of gas that was being supplied to my engine thanks to my literally clogged solid fuel filter and weak pump for the past god knows how long, the tps had to alter the amount of airflow as well? and now with my properly working pump and filter it's not adjusting? I dunno if that's how it works but i'm hoping it'll solve the problem. Fingers crossed.

I'll definitely check out my booster though

Try pulling the hose right next to the thermostat follow it to the iac valve under the throttle body. Clean out both ends where where it hooks into the thermostat bowl and on the iac valve side. also clean the fitting where the line hooks on to. Its a 12mm.

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated. I'll clean out the iac hoses and update when i do so. The problem is getting worse everyday and try not to drive it but now it's at the point where i can't at all. it sputters and puts and dies. No power, also when it was running i removed the intake elbow coming from the filter and it died instantly O_O But like I said I will update as soon as I do what you guys suggested =)

Hi Lepprykaun, I have similar or same issues.
I need some serious help. My original AFM was not working, and tested bad. Since then, my garage (I suck at mechanics) has not been able to fix the intake. They have tried three or more remanufactured AFM's, short of a new one ($900 from Toyota). The mechanic has been testing/adjusting the AFM's, checking ECU, vacuum lines, and testing for fuel pump, and TPS failure.
I have asked and spoken to LCE, 22rePerformance, and TCR - all have given opinion, and suggest I check the same things - they all say the AFM is (probably) not failing.
If anyone has experienced this, and/or can provide some insight and hopefully a fix, please write. Thanks very much!

Okay.. So i have cleaned the iacv and hoses, quadruple checked for vacuum leaks and still nothing. The problem still persists. However I have an exhaust leak and when i bought the truck i figured i would ignore it until i decided to find time to fix it... =P It has gotten worse but i didn't think that the exhaust leak could play any sort of role in this problem i'm having but can anyone tell me otherwise? I'm beginning to think that with the amount of exhaust leaking into the engine bay my engine isn't sucking in clean air and maybe that's why it's stalling? Could this affect the o2 sensor in such a way that it would cause this problem im having? Also i'm thinking that when i removed the intake elbow off my throttle body the exhaust gases sucked in right away which stalled it immediately. If i'm making any sense to anyone i look forward to a response lol. Thanks!

Engine will die with intake elbow removed, that causes no air through the AFM and that causes the contacts inside to open and kill power to the fuel pump. I would check all the rubber parts of the intake plumbing for small cracks:

You might check for any stored trouble codes:

And the surging with the brakes is indicative of too high an idle speed, see Q&A #2 below:

okay thanks. I'll check the codes when i can. I checked the intake elbows and plastic pipe for cracks and holes and it checked out good to me. Can you tell me some symptoms of a failing afm? I smell gas, i've got spark and when it does start it runs for a minute before it dies. It runs like a bag when it is at idle. Any chance my new fuel pump plays a part with the malfunctioning of the afm?

any chance that if this line were to get clogged enough that it would cause loss of power and even stalling?

hmmmm, i'm stumped. I'm going to clean the line that connects through the thermostat and iac that was posted earlier in this thread. I'll check my vacuum for a fifth time to be safe and i'll research more about this afm.

Pretty easy to test the AFM:

Might also try the fuel pump test jumper and see if that makes any difference:
