Well I'm at it again working on the wife's 87 4Runner ... this thing is a pest... but I still love it.. need to replace the spedo cable & the heater control selectors I have gotten as far as pulling out the gauge cluster & radio out.. I'm wondering if the or how the dash pad/crash pad(on The passengers side) comes off? Any pics tips? Also my temp gauge goes up & down. Randomly & I've unpluged the 2 temp sending units I believe I unpluged the correct 2. Thanks 4 any helping advice :-)

 

I believe there are 7 screws/bolts to get out that release the dash pad which invloves removing the the vents. If you search there are a ton of diagrams that show the screw/bolt locations.

As far as temp gauge goes go buy a thermostat from a toyota dealership will usually solve that problem otherwise your gauge cluster has a short

 

Ok so is there screws/bolts on the underside of the dash pad near the defroster vents? My 80 4x4 has little metal push clamps on the underside of the pad so I was wondering if there was some kind of clips there because I have my dash down to the pad bein the only thing left ... & 4 the temp gauge I put new thermostat in It & new radiator & hoses ... but I have something weird going on with my wiring ...v

How I fixed my erratic guage. Also your Cold Start Injector Tming switch and the Thermo switch could use a good cleaning as well.

A while back I was mentioning that my wifes truck water temp guage was going from half way to cold. I actually forgot about it until I drove it today and it did it again. I pulled the water temp sensor and it had green corrosion on the sensor cleaned them with a brass wire brush and then I cleaned the contacts that goes to the wire as well with electrical contact cleaner. No more problems. Stays just below half as it usually does. I knew it wasnt overheating, but still like having a guage.

Here is a picture of a dirty Temperture Sensor. I have seen worse. I chipped some of the scale build up off so you could see a difference.


The sensor sits just below the Cold Start Injector in the Intake manifold. Uses a 17mm deepwell socket and is a 5 minute job.

 

Another very common problem is the temp gauge itself. If it works when you hit the gauge cluster, the screws on the back are loose. Take the gauge cluster out, loosen the screws for the temp gauge, clean them up, and crank them down tight. That's what was wrong with mine. Even if they look tight, they need to be pretty snug.
