Complete loss of power at 2750 rpm (3.4 L)

I recently purchased a 1996 T100 4x4 (I know there is a forum for t100s but this question should apply here too and probably has more viewers) . It has about 125,000 miles on it and I only paid $800. I have absolutely no history on it, no maintenance records, or anything of the sort. Everything seems to be in decent working order. However, there is a loss of power that occurs at about 2750 RPM. I changed the fuel filter in the hippuric power in general but the problem persists. I put new PCV valve in too but that had no result. I have pulled one of the spark plugs and it looks pretty good. I don't know where to start really. Should I pull the fuel pump and make sure the screen is clean? What about injectors? I feel like it must be a fuel or spark related.

Dan

have you tried seafoam(chemtool is cheaper)?
and maybe some 93 octane.

I'm using the highest octane available at my las fill up (91/93?). I have some sea foam in the garage I'll put in it and see if that helps.

Codes?

Do you have access to a OBDII scan tool? This could give you a starting point if you have an error code ie. Misfire, throttle position, etc... Great deal for $800...

Have you checked if the valve covers are leaking into the spark plugs? This causes misfires... What about a compression test? Maybe the price was ultra low for a reason.... Still a decent price even if you have to do an engine swap. Sorry for being a downer! Still, I'd start with codes.

i know my 22re ran better every time i did a timing chain replacement.

and my acura ran better when i did the timing belt.

i did the timing belt on my 3.4 before i installed it.

maybe it could use a tune up and a timing belt, water pump etc. if its never been done.

sounds to me like a fuel mixture issue. Run that seafoam through it to clean it up and see if that does it. What elevation do you live at?

I only have 1/4 can of Seafoam and currently have a full tank of gas so I need to buy more tomorrow. I have an inexpensive scanner but don't see a check engine light so I haven't checked that yet. I'll hook it up and see if there are any codes anyway.

I'm going to put some fresh spark plugs in it tomorrow and probably wires too. Can someone please clarify whether the coils are separate? I notice 2 different 3-wire sets on Oreily's/Autozone's website and looks like the coils don't come with it, right? Any suggested brands (or more importantly ones to stay away from)?

Just put the scanner on it. No codes and no CEL.

Check your vacuum connections.

And next time, post in the appropriate section, and try searching. There are about a hundred post about a 3.0 running like crap after removing the manifold and 95% say something about checking for the proper routing of vacuum lines of the passenger side of the motor.
