changing rear brakes w/o parking brake?

about time to get my brakes changed, well actually past time. I was going to pick up the equipment to do it myself, but I found this- http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/rearbrakes/
and it says to use the parking brake to adjust, but my parking brake cable snapped before I got my 4runner 10k miles ago. So do I need to take it to a shop or do it myself and not worry about it? When I changed my brakes on my little car I just pumped the brakes and that did it.
