I just replaced the master clutch cylinder. It was leaking into the cab. When I was taking it for a test drive I noticed a light squeal or scratching noise. I could hear it when I was in all gears or neutral. If I put a little pressure on the clutch or gas the noise would go away. Any ideas what is causing the noise?

 

Where was the noise coming from? The shift boot, the firewall, under the rig, or under the hood?

If it is from the firewall, the sound deadening could have gotten buggered up putting everything back together and now you hear some new noises.

The shift boot could be signs of a clutch not fully disengaging and the throwout bearing or disk is dragging. I'd try bleeding the clutch more.

Same aplies if it is coming from under the hood or rig.

 

It sounds like it is coming from under the hood. Almost like it's coming from a belt, but it definitely is not a belt. I did bleed the clutch but I guess it could do it a bit more. I can feel the clutch is engaging much better than it was before. If I'm driving in any gear and I don't push on the gas I can hear it, like if I'm costing I can can hear it.

 

If you ever so slightly put pressure on the clutch pedal, does the sound go away?

 

Yes, As soon as I put the slighted pressure on the clutch the sound goes away.

Ah crap. I want to be sure this is the problem before I pull the trany. That is going to be a pain in the butt! How sure are that us the problem and how urgent is it that I change it?

 

I really can't be sure without being there, but it sounds like that's what it is, because it changes with pedal pressure, so what else could it be? If it was the pilot bearing it would only make noise when the clutch is first engaged with the vehicle in gear, and a transmission input bearing would only make noise when the input shaft was spinning with the vehicle moving or in neutral. I have an old Chevy 4X4 pickup that I did a little deep water fording with about 3 years ago and right after that mine made a similar sound, like I said that was three years ago, so it's anybody's guess how long it will last, and I do drive this truck regularly.

 

I noticed this same problem... drove for 3 month daily to and from work and play before replacing my entire clutch assembly.

To be clear: I only NEEDED to do the release bearing (causing the noise). The rest was for peace of mind. The release bearing was in pretty rough shape by then, but still working.

I noticed, and have been told, the release bearings tend to fail slowly. Initially mine would only squeal during cold starts, then all starts, then all driving unless the clutch had a tiny bit of pressure on it, then finally aalllllllll the time. I replaced it 2 days after it wouldn't shut up.
