im getting ready to start a project truck. i have a 94 toyota extra cab that was rolled and i want to turn it in to a crawler i have a front straight axle with factory 5 inch lift springs and a rear axle that im considering converting to coil suspension instead of leaf springs. there will be no bed just tube cage and i want my shock mounts to be higher than the frame. basicily i just need to know where to start. where should i mount my shocks and coils. what shocks do i need what coils should i use?

 

5" factory lift? Where did you find those?

 

If you are asking where to start on such a project, you need to find an easier project.

I just mean the lift springs sold on trailgear.com sorry if I worded that wrong. As you can probably tell im new to this whole thing.

 

Leaf springs are much easier to set up and cheaper than coil springs. I'd start with leaf springs.

Ok thanks. so I picked up a pair of 63 inch chevy springs for 50 bucks. I figured deal like that I cant pass up. So im thinking about shortening the distance between the front and rear axles. Keep in mind i have the extra cab so ihave some room to play with. How far back should I mount these 63 chevys? And im assuming ill need some pretty long rear shackles and maybe a couple inch lift blocks to level it out?

Thank you those links helped alot. Ok so I keep hear about it so I have to ask. Where to I go to find add a leafs for my 63 chevys? Do I just pick them up a junk yard or is that kit sold on certain web sites? Also what about a sas? Ive done alot of research but I cant find any shortcuts or money savers. Everything just says to buy the expensive do it your self kits. Any tips/ideas?

 

Money savers? Build your own hanger and shackles, that will save some money, wont be a short cut though. Either way you cut it, your going to spend some cash on a SAS, if it were easy and cheap everyone would have done it by now.
You can find add a leafs at most likely any off road supplier for Chevy springs.

 

thanks for all the help you guys. so a buddy of mine owed me some money so we settled on trading for a toyota straight axle he has. i havnt seen it yet but he says its already trussed, it has a locker, not sure what kind but im guessing its just a clicker, boby longfields? not sure a whole lot about those just know they are stronger, something about 30 spline axle shafts..which i think might be the bobby longfields, and some kind of heavy duty bearings. any comments on that?

I think ill keep it then. so im thinking about running 37 inch tires possibly bigger and im interested in dual cases but should I consider 5.29.'s in ny axles before the duals? And if anyone knows a good link for gearing/ and or dual cases I would appreciate it

You will need 5.29 yes

If you're gonna roll 37 you'll need to upgrade the front inner axles to atleast chromoly. 30 splines if you're gonna do dual cases

 

I'm going down to a 35. I drive my junk on the road to much and anything over 35 is nearly TWICE the cost per tire. Fyi

 

Thank you that helps alot I did not know that. And I do have the 30 spline chromoly axle shafts in the front with a locker in it. Is the locker and the big tires and low gears going to be able to break that axle shaft? What about the rear, will it break if I have stock axle shafts and lower gears? I figured id thrower clicker locker in it. Will it definetly break then? And still if anyone has good links for any of this stiff that would help alot. Esspessially on the dual cases. Thanks

I've had buddies kill dirty thirties with dual cases. Long fields too... Its a matter of luck and how hard you bash your stuff.

There's a thread on here somewhere a guys rear axle shaft sheered on the road. I'd upgrade the rears. $150 a chromoly shaft. Requires some special tools to swap brakes bearings etc tho fyi

 

Keep in mind there are lots of variables are work when breaks happen and why they happen. Just because someone broke inners on 37s doesn't mean you would in the same situation.

For example you're a helluva lot more likely to grenade parts running 37x13.50 17 toyo MTs vs a Goodyear 37x13.50 15 MTR. There's a HUGE difference in wheel+tire weight. Massive. One of my MTRs weighs roughly 75#. A 35x1250 bfg km2 is 52# and not that toyos are nearly 90#s before a 17" wheel.

Thanks for the tips. So other than upgrading to full sized axles...is there anything that can be done to beef them up past the 30 spline bobby longfields. And just a side note, just had my 33-12.50-15 toyo mt's with toyota rims stolen last night.
