Question CA Smog hell - 17%02 Reading

Hi All - new to the the forum, but glad to have found it. Purchased a 83 4wd Truck (22r) from a ranch for 300 bucks. Got it running and the thing is in decent shape for being abused the way it was!

Here is what has been done so far:
  • Rebuilt Carb
  • New dist cap, plugs, wires
  • New fuel filter, oil + filter, radiator hoses, wheel bearings, and other basic PM.
  • New Cat and muffler
  • Replaced all the gaskets in the exhaust (Engine --> manifold, Manifold-->pipe, Pipe--->Cat)
  • Helicoiled all the manifold studs back in place can torque to spec w/o a problem
  • Plugged some minor leaks in exhaust that where found with soap and attached shop vac (blowing not sucking). Found more small leaks on the new welds cat/muffler then on the old down pipe!
  • I think I have fixed just about every minor leak in the exhaust.
Runs pretty well but will not pass smog due to high O2 readings (around 17%). 17% is super high to me (CA min is 2% it think). I have to be missing something pretty big..I just can't figure out what! Appreciate any help!

You can always try the isopropyl alcohol in the gas tank trick.

Someone might be able to help better if you post up smog results.

I just did the alcohol trick about a month ago, but my hydrocarbons were high. But I noticed my co2 went down to zero from whatever it was.

Ok so here is a thought, is there any chance that smog pump is pushing too much air into the exhaust thus causing the high O2 reading???

Here's some good reading material regarding combustion chemicals (smog related) and how they relate to each other.

Since you did not post all of your smog readings, you'll have to figure out what-is-what.
