Pinion chewed on it. When did that happen? Is that what you're asking?

My guess would be before the new gears were installed...

Just wondering what would leave teeth marks there. Couldn't wrap my brain around how the pinion would hit right there

I did have a recent problem with the pinion nut not being staked down, took it to pro gear in San Diego and they said it should be good. I'm wheelin on Saturday so hopefully it doesn't grenade on me

Well...they might be right. But they did fix it from getting worse atleast. You could replace the carrier fairly easily if you wanted to. They're dime a dozen. Those gears still look just fine to me.

I'd start saving up. There is a good chance there are micro cracks in the teeth. A few good shock loads and it could go boom. Or it may not. Either way I'd start preping for that.

I've seen this before...
In my first diff rebuild...reused the pinion nut, it came loose about 2 miles from my house, when on the coast side the nut let loose, slamming the pinion gear into the the third case locking the diff completely! Holy dang batman what was that...? One hell of a god awful sound and slam forward and instant stoppage right in the middle of the road...and then the drive shaft came rolling out...I laughed...what else could I do? That's what it takes in my experience to see the case chewed like that.
