22re power mods for around 200

Were i live its nothing but hills and on the high way we go up hill and i really could use alittle more power to make it up with the 33s but i dont have the money for lower gears. I have a K&N flat filter and a fiber glass pack muffler. What else can i do to get some more power, i know how to make more power but with v8s, 4 bangers are new to me and im not sure whats the biggest bang for the buck for power, oh and with out effecting MPG because i commute to college

Well I would say a header,Exhaust and a cam. Even a good tune up will do wonders.

For the price of a K&N air filter and a header and exhaust upgrades that will result in maybe 3 mpg improvement you could go to a junkyard and pull a set of 4.56 gears from a 4runner. Look for v6 4runners with an automatic

with a 4 cylinder motor you are basically wasting your money on engines mods until you regear.

X2 Gearing will be the only mod that actually gives you power, untill then your just spinning your wheels slower then you should be, and with less torque.
Yes I know you dont have the cash to regear, but save the money for it, dont buy a bunch of little scams, just save for gears and proper maintenance.

Believe it or not gears will help you with that whole gravel situation also.

Smoother torque. Less likely to break traction with more control over the wheel spin.
And more power if you need speed.

like everyone had stated you aint gonna get much out of a 22re . MY suggestion would be these mods in this order .

1 GEARS
2 header/exhaust
3 cam

when i regeared my 85 it was a whole new truck it was so much more enjoyable to drive . hell I can even tow my little malibu skier up to berryessa with it .

Save your money and try to find some used diffs with lower gears - like factory 4.88s. Unless you're going to do basically everything to your 22re - like header, exhaust, cam, etc, it's not going to be worth just doing one. Geared diffs are your best bed and pop up in the classifieds occasionally, but I'd also check craigslist and call around to used part dealers/salvage places. You should be able to find a f/r 4.88 diff set for less than $600. if you find a set for less than $400 jump on that the same day.

It's going to be a lot more than $200 to get a noticeable power increase out of a 22re, and gearing won't make much (if any) difference on the highway hill climbs...gears don't add power, they just move it around.

I'd honestly be more concerned with catching up on any neglected maintenance items.

This is news to me.

So I will be able to go just as fast on hills with 4:10's and 35's as I would with my current 5:29's. Well shoot guess I should have saved my money.

Toyota does not have dana 30 axles. toyota makes their axles. They have a dropout 3rd member with the gears in it similar to a Ford 9 inch. Some toyotas come with 4.10, 4.56, and 4.88 gears. the 4.88 and 4.56 generally came with the v6 motors. My v6 pickup came from the factory with a 5 sp and 4.56. I know many v6 4runners with automatics came with 4.88 gears.

Think of gears as a mechanical leverage for the motor. the motor is designed to turn a factory 28 in tires, but you increased your tire size to 33 inches. so you have 5 more inches of tire to turn so your motor has to work that much harder. You dont notice it has much on a v8 but on a 4 cylinder you really notice it. basically your truck probably came with 28 in tires and 4.10 gears. to restore your truck back to factory performance you need to look for 4.56 gears to accommodate your 33 inch tires. Lots of threads on all this info in here so read up

Junk/Craigslist/partout 4.56 Gears, maybe run pizza cutters 33x9.5, the intake header and exhaust are smaller but still good mods, the gears will be the best all around thing, remember it's the little engine that could

No, but I bet 3rd gear with 4.10s is lower than 5th with 5.29s. My point was regearing will not increase/decrease power output, it simply changes the gear ratio. If you can hold 55mph up a grade in 3rd with 4.10s and hold 55mph on the same grade in 5th with 5.29s, you're still holding 55mph. Don't get me wrong, regearing is almost necessary for anything over 33s, but for someone with only $200 to spend, it's not really an option.

This guy think its a jeep?
That would be like having a lexus and thinking you have a hyundai.

But I think all V6 4runners with autos at least had 4.56's. I dont think any of them had 4.30 or anything, Pretty sure. So if he does have 4.11's now then he has a good chance of finding 4.56 or 4.88, either would be good IMO.

Gearing does mostly move ratios around, but ever notice how a lower geared rig goes through a gear with less speed increase, but with more noticable torque? A rig with 2.10 gearing can almost go from 10 to 50 in one gear. But a rig with 5.29's can only gain 30mph ish in one gear. Thats until tire sizes get changed also, then the gearing just compensates and nothing changes from stock.

But I bet with 2 identical yotas, same tires, same motor, that the lower geared one will smoke the higher geared one, until top speed gets involved and who cares aboot that with a yota?

Also, think the whole power problem is from bigger then stock tires. So just be correcting that the truck will have the torque it had stock. And these things had plenty of pep stock.
