I had taken my 2002 4runner Sport to the body shop for repairs from a tree falling on the passenger side during a wind storm in central PA. Both pass doors were flaired away from the body at the top. The roof line was moderatly buckled in as well. Basically $6500 worth of work later I end up with the entire truck painted minus the rear hatch and front bumper. The entire paint job showed orange peel mixed with fish eyes. They even got some suspension parts with overspray. They put tire shine on the rear hatch and front bumper to "make it shine like the rest of the paint." What should I request from these jack holes. I want the orange peel/fish eyes removed for sure. However they have to do it. The paint is the biggest issue. I'll address one at a time in this post. Let's hear how you would handle this situation.

I'd assume insurance paid for it? Get your claims adjuster to handle it.

$6500 in damage, I am surprised the insurance company didn't total it...

It is in the hands of the insurance adjuster currently.

The original quote was for $5500 which was 10% away from being totaled.
When it was all said and done they charged the insurance company $6500.

I picked up the runner last Thursday. I had no choice other than to take it with me.(My ride left) I found all of these issues and the guy said to just bring it back monday he would have a rental for me at that point.

Yesterday I show up and dude starts getting pissy with me about my complaints. About .005 seconds before I choked him out I took my list from him and told him to screw himself!!

I called my adjuster and explained that he was not willing to make my truck right and talking to me like a douche. For God's sake my tail light was replaced and neither brake, turn, running or, reverse work. He said "Your going to be coming back 15 times and you'll never be happy." I had to remind him that this was my first time back like he told me to. Also I wouldn't be standing in front of him if the work was done right the first time. NOBODY screws UP MY TOYS AND GET'S AWAY WITH IT!!!!

 

They removed the flairs which were scratched. Painted under the flair area. Replaced the flairs never painted them...

 

Wow, sounds like a hack job to me just keep on it and be persistent. Was this a well known shop or some little gig?

 

This is a chain of 3 shops in the area. They are all owned by one person. Select Collision Center, Hershey, PA.

 

You could also tell the shop that you'd talk to the better business bureau and put a review on yelp

 

^^^Don't do that. A threat won't get you ANYWHERE except make enemies.

As posted above, complain to your insurance company. Orange peel is bound to happen to some extent. The only vehicles that don't have it cost WAAAAAY more than yours. They had it too, its just been cut and polished out. Also ask your insurance company about the flares. If the body shop didn't do work they got paid for they're in it big time now. Are you sure its a fish eye and not just poorly sprayed metallics? Both are unacceptable, but if your going to complain make sure you know what your talking about.

The #1 advice I can give is DON'T BE AN CRAZY DING NUT!!!! If you start losing your cool with ANYONE involved you won't get anywhere. Keep a level head, think logically, don't blurt out the first thing that comes to mind, and it will probally be delbt with in good fashion.

The thing that would scare me about this is, if they cut that many corners on the visible stuff, how many corners did they cut on the metal work and just use body filler instead?

 

Quick question...2002 Toyota 4Runners...Do they have a rough finished surface on the bottom 1/4 of the doors? I thought it could be some sort of undercoating style protection from stone chips but, mine looks like they got very lazy wet sanding and buffing. Very intense orange peel!!! I know the drips don't belong.

 

Pretty sure they do, my 98 Tacoma did. I have a 96 Limited 4Runner so cladding hides my bottom 1/4.

X3 on insurance involvement, let them handle it and it will get handled correctly.

As for orange peel, some is typical. I had a Sport hood put on mine and the finish came out smooth as glass so that shop went the extra step to make it look good.

 

I'm meeting with my claim adjuster today to go over it with him. He's actually the manager of my insurance companies local office. He's pretty ticked off too.

As for orange peel. Thier is not one square inch of anything the resembles glass. I'll try to link some pictures tonight after i pick up my grease pencil and circle all the fish eyes.

Oh, last night, i popped the hood (so thrown off with the paint i didn't even look under the hood), I found three scotch-brite pads folded up and jammed between intake and firewall. I'm going to discuss what would be fair payment to the shop and i'll take the difference!!! I've painted MC fenders, bumpers, hoods, etc. in my garage and they've turned out way better.

Hate to hear it, hope you left the crap under the hood or took pics for the adjuster's reference. Leads me to think you should check for other things left behind that may cause a fire. Also, you may want to have somebody with a hose soak the repaired roof and doors while you're inside looking for any water coming in.

 

how about taking it to a reputable shop for a repair estimate on the "repairs".
make a complete list of all the problems of this hackjob, i mean, repair job.
this should give you and your ins company a guide for reimbursement.
stick to your guns and accept nothing short of reasonable workmanship.

almost all paint has orange peel untill you color sand and buff it.
they can make it right or pay for someone else to. imo.

 

just keep persisting until it is right it is not ur fault the insurance guys uses a bad shop and the only reason they use them is most likely because he is a friend of a friend so that is why every one has to go there....i had a problem with my girlfriends land rover when it had to get insurance work done when she "bumped" in to some one and had to get a new bumper and her hood painted and they did a terrible job on it and acutely had to get flat bedded back the first time and then we had to bring it back 2 more times after that... the point of the story is to keep on them, because we did all that for a land rover imagine if it was a toyota!
