JRED151 _1989 _4runner_ Build-Up Thread

Hey there-
Here is my 1989 4runner with a flip-pac.
3.0 v6
5speed manual
1.5 BJ Spacers and Zuk mod currently.
Nothing super special on it yet.
1/2 Marlin Clutch kit (they sent me the wrong pressure plate. long story, wont order from them again)

Future mods:
Original un-used Downey Headers (to be installed in the next 3 months)
Blazeland Lift (hope to instal July or August)
Chevy 63's in the rear.
This is going to be more of an expedition rig than anything. More mods to come

Mounted

Deployed

Interior view

The front supports still need to be fabbed up. Tent needs a good cleaning and mattress and mattress cover need to be made.
The build thread on the FLip-pac mod is over on expo.
If theres enough interest I will transfer it over.

Thanks
Jason

Thanks rustED. I think I might be the first to finish the FLip-pac on a 1st gen 4runner. A guy on expedition portal forum did one with a wildernest as well.

I CANT WAIT TO SEE MORE. ha

Yeah they didnt make any for the 4runner. I taught myself how to fiberglass on that mod. Found a flip-pac from '97 up north and just had to see if i could bond the front of the 4runner top to the flip-pac. If I was going to tdo it over again I would do a few things differently but it held up fine when I took it up to the southern Sequia's last weekend. Here are more picts of the process of bonding the 2 campers together.

Yeah if you look at the link to my photo bucket you can see the process shots. I trimmed the front of the camper to meet the profile of the 4runner camper. I cut the front rim of the 4runner and lined both up. I then used aluminum angle to rivet the two campers together. After that it was all fiberglass and resin to seal and strengthen the campers together.

Just checked out your flip pak build over at expedition portal forum, awesome work! I love seeing something innovative, different, and yet functional, you nailed it!!! Are you still planning on doing barn doors for the rear, with the integrated step?

I would love to do the barn doors with the integrated step. Its a possibility, and would so cool but its down the list for sure. I was maybe thinking of a gutting the tailgate and adding a swing out cooking area
Heres the list in order:

1. Finish front supports
2. Clean and patch tent
3. Find some nice foam and make the mattress cover.
4. 1" body lift
5. Downey Headers>>>>entire exhaust
6. Blazeland IFS kit
7. Chevy 63's
8. Lockers
8. simple rear bumber

and I am sure I'm leaving something out like other essentials for extended camping trips. Tent needs to get finished so my Wife can enjoy it as well. ha

That would look and perform sweet with the blazeland kit and 63" Chevy springs. Your going to have the ultimate off-road camper! Look forward to seeing some more progress!
PS, if you decide to get rid of the soft top Ill take it off your hands!

Not sure but I doubt I would want to run the heater for too long. I did buy a heavy duty rain fly for the flip-pac from SLO sail. That will help keep us warm in most cases. The 2 dogs will help as well. ha. I have been looking into heat sources when we are not running but haven't settled on anything. Most seem to be too pricey considering its going into a 20+ year old truck. Might just have the wife double up on the sleeping bags. Ha

I will let you know. I do miss having it on the truck during these hot summer socal days. Before the Flip-pac went on I had the soft top sides rolled up for a a good 2 months!

"LOOK INTO MY EYES, Jason>>>>> .... Rusted(ED) is TOO FAR to pick up that soft top.... You don't want to ship it.... You want to give it to meeeeeeee, Jason..... I am on my wayyyyyyy. Good, now rest your eyes until you hear me pull in the driveway.... Yessssss, it's meeeee, I'm leaving now, and I'm going to count to 3, and when you hear the CHIRP of my tires in the driveway, leaving, you will WAKE UP! 1, .................2, ............... " POOF! hahaha.

hahaha... JK... I just don't 'need' it, ya know?(would LOVE to have one... Just can't 'justify' the expense right now, ya know???) I actually love the hard tops on these.... but MANNNNNNNNNNNNNN, I have to say, HOLY CRAPULA, ...that pop up is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing work... Seriously!

So, you just researched and found how to do this type of work? Or you are skilled with it already, just implementing it into this mod?????? I WOULD LOVE to have that thing! SCRIBEDED!

"One more thing..... ........ Leave the topper on stilts, ..... I will install that before I goooooooooo, ..... then I'll just throw the soft topper in the baaaaack.... " POOOF!

HAHAHA yeah when I actually decide to sell the soft top then I will start the "buy" line. I dont want to get rid of it yet.

I had worked with resin before in my art but this Flip-pac mod was a huge learning experience. I had to redo the fiberglass 3 times in areas due to getting my resin to harder ratios wrong. It was soooooo much work because I didnt know what I was doing. If I was to do it again I would have it down in 1/4 of the time i think. By the time I had laid the final layer on I had the process down. Its all about making sure your ratio is right, surface is clean, and all you r glass is cut to size.
