So the other night on the trail I tipped my 4runner on its side. I'm not really sure what to do with it at this point. It already had a fair amount of body damage but i feel now that its beyond what i can afford. The engine still runs ok but tranny has no 5th gear (blown synchro?) I really do not wanna get rid of this truck, but if i part it out maybe i can get enough money to just find another 1st gen? Any help would be much appreciated....

 

Unless you need it to be pretty, a come along, high lift and bfh will get it straight enough to close the doors and get a windshield in, if it's even that bad. I laid the 85 in my avatar on its side twice and it was my daily driver. Just slapped a door on it afterward and ran it.

 

Yea it's already pretty ugly so I don't mind that.... Only thing is I have a baby on the way too and I feel that with all the other problems I'm having with it (tranny, blew power steering box, etc) its becoming more of a money pit than anything. I feel if maybe I just try and part it out I could get a good chunk of change for one that's in much better condition. Thoughts?

 

think of it this way u buy a newer or new car u will still be putting money into it while paying on it. keep what ya got and fix it i know it seems like nickel and diming ya to death but u will save money in the long run just my .002

 

Weld the front and rear diffs and wheel the piss out of it.

Find something else to daily drive.

 

Does that same rule apply if I'm planning on getting another 1st gen 4runner? I see them on craigslist anywhere between $2000 and $4500.

well buying another one the same style never hurst if ya can afford it but id keep the other one for parts or wheeling

 

well i dont really think i can afford another one without parting out the one i have. well how much do people usually get when they part out cars anyway? would i even get close to the $2500 mark? and i'm assuming it probably takes a while right? its probably not even worth the hassle huh?

 

Part it out to yourself to get the full value of the parts.You may get a better bang for your buck if you keep the parts for your new vehicle. Most of your runner parts will also fit a pick-up that has the same motor. If you can get a fixer upper cheap and switch over some parts then you will probably be money ahead.

 

If you are parting out... What year is it? Do you still have the carburator? I'm looking for a ready-to-install and bolt in carburator which means it does NOT require rebuilding. Please PM me with details and price.

I doubt it is carb'd... pretty sure '84 was the only year 4runners were carb'd from the factory.

 

Do you have power windows. Ill buy the motors, and a passenger mirror. Oh yea maybe some door panels.

 

No, '84 were only carb'd, '85 had Carb or EFI, '86+ was ONLY EFI the US Market.
