Hey everybody I'm new to the site and have been enjoying the tech info. I searched but found nothing to answer my question..so here it is. Could you use adjustable type threaded body coilovers to replace the shocks on 86 4runner with the stock leafs left for lateral stability and adj. coilovers for sagging rear or to put on 33in tires?

 

Search for the "Zuk mod". This modification is for sagging springs on old 4runners.

I assume you could get taller coils to add additional clearance for larger tires, but I would start looking at new leaf springs if lifting too high. Otherwise you limit the down travel of the stock springs and shackle.

 

The shocks are not in an ideal location for supporting the weight of the vehicle. They are designed only to slow movement.

That said, the issue with your concept, is you're essentially taking the weight off the leafs, and using them just as links. Except, leafs are not links. They bend, especially when unloaded. You will have a lot of issue with axle wrap, and things shifting around on you.


IMO, sticking some coils in there to give it an inch or 2 of a budget boost is OK for a mall crawler. But if you actually plan to use the rig, do it right. Leafs bearing the full load of the rig like they were intended, or 4-link.

 

I 've already read up on the ZUK mods before I posted, thats what gave me the idea about coilovers. I thought I might could get the same results without altering the bumpstops or spending any money ( I have coilover springs and shocks leftover from 15 years of dirt track racing) oh well just a thought. I will probably try this first to see how it works. Thanks for input.
