:jessica: Now being it was the second time I changed there belts 2000 Tacoma 3.4 5 speed. This all started because I had a leaky oil fill cap and was putting a new one on and saw the alternator belt about to break.

I think 4 hours was not to bad considering it was June and very hot.

Now in the 20,000 miles since I changed the belts all the tensioners were seized fast nothing would loosen even though all the holding nuts came loose not like I forgot to loosen them.

Much Kroil later and some taping with the hammer got things off . The Ac belt and Alternator belt went on just fine.

The power steering belt after a half hour I discovered I had been given one 10 mm shorter . Wow10 mm was enough to not be able to get it on. Just the luck of the draw.

wow 4 hrs ya no maybe a hour tops but sounds like yours was all rusted and being a pita soo ya 4hr's

It's not how long that it took to get it done that is important, but that you got it done successfully.

 

No comments from the rust belt yet, so I guess I have to chime in, Doesn't surprise me one bit with the pulley issues.

Where did you get the belts from? I've seen that before at Autozone, I am sure it happens many more places too. People come in buy a pricey belt, and then buy a cheapo belt swap them in the package and "return the pricey belt".

 

Do them all when you do your timing belt and put anti-seize on your adjusters and you will never have this problem, even in the rust belt. I did my first set at 120K with the TB and have 30K on the second (OEM). The OEM belts last a long time if they don't get coolant or oil on them.

I bought the belts from my local autoparts vendor.

I had them on the shelf since I did the first set.

I just put the old power steering belt back on for now..

Yes Wabbit it is hot for me it must of been all of 75 degrees F

I am much more comfortable on a nice 20 degree day to me that is sweat shirt weather.

Another new set of Belts ordered from Toyota. plus the extra one.

I am to the point I hate doing this kind of work I would rather Fabricate Hitches Winch mounts and bumpers and repair Frames any day.

 

Heh... I tend toward the other extreme. I had a fan belt break while driving home last winter. Outside temp -15F and 15mph wind. I was able to replace the belts on my truck in 25 minutes (5 mins outside, 5 mins in the wife's truck warming my hands alternating).

Then again I'm not in the rust belt.

Seriously though, 4 hours because of rusted stuck fasteners... That sounds like a royal PITA.

 

On about hour 3 I hear myself talking while gritting my teeth, saying something like: "why won't you just turn you stinking thing?" or "I freaking hate this, I should have been done two hours ago." I think that AC pulley tensioner was fabricated by a criminal mastermind. It looks so easy, but it always takes forever to let go.

 

The belts on these can be a bear. I found it almost impossible to tighten the tensioner back up on the power steering belt the first time around.
