TOO HOT...need my a/c to stay on
My 92 4runner v6 ofcourse !!!
when I start my car up n press the a/c button the idle goes up no cold air. I ck the compressor and its not locked up. Ck the condenser fan and its also not spinning...but when I drive it and stop at the street lights or stop signs ill hear this click click click noise from under the glove compartment and the a/c well blow ice cold air for about 10 minutes then completely die unless I do 70 MPH on the highway...I have ckd all a/c fuses ck all a/c components ck feon ckd for power to fan and compressor they all work..I now have my glove box off to see where the clicking noise is coming from and I think its coming from the amplifier. I searched and that's what they call that so I'm going with that name..
Anybody dealing with the same problem???
Thanks for any solutions

I'm not there yet. I am putting a/c in my runner after owning it for a couple of years. On my 88 i put in a new compressor, vacuumed it, and added gas and it was easy and cold. Never a problem. The 84 has proved another story, before a compressor was even hooked up I could push the a/c button and it would illuminate. After vacuuming it and gassing it up (with a buddy that is an a/c man), the compressor never engaged. I removed the cooling unit (under the dash) and my new low pressure switch came in today. Before work in the morning I will attempt to put it all back together. I will say there are many electronics (sylenoids, fuses, sensors) in and near the "cooling unit" Waskillywabbit was kind enough to put a link on a post I had that led me to 40 pages from the fsm. Here's the link

Nope no bubbles. I've given up trying to find the culprit ill just drive with the window open whenever the a/c decides it doesn't wana work.
Its just funny my brothers a master ase certified Toyota tech and he won't help me out cuz
he's too tired to mess with cars if its not at the shop....

Hmmmm, well, it can only be 'one' thing out of a 'few'.... I'm not familiar with the 92 V6 System, and mine is 87 22re... But since you're having 'speed sensitive' issues, I would GUESS, ONLY A GUESS, that the compressor is unable to generate enough 'umph' until you reach, what, 3000rpm? It might not do that while SITTING and revving at 3000rpm because while rolling, you're actually gonna have better cooling, etc., within the cooling system. (Does the coolant temperature have anything to do with your AC not wanting to run? NO CLUE, lol... And I would ASSUME that you are trying to run the AC pretty much right off the bat when starting it, right?).....
Could be coincidental; The fact that you're doing 70mph. But it seems that's something you've really checked out, for sure.
You're hearing clicking in the dash... That's either the AC-Relay for the Blower Motor or a type of "cycle timing" unit, at least in mine. I'm not certain if it could cause what you're experiencing.... but I'd look into it, anyhow. That unit/sensor(?) can be 'ADJUSTED' to stay on it's cycle longer. I'm trying to remember what Charlie Cool's Owner told me, .... but I believe it was adjusted in relation to "idle up". This came up with him because I noticed that my compressor was staying on a long time, before switching off. I have all new o-rings, R12(shhhh) and new Drier, compressor clutch works great and I held 40# vacuum on the system over night with a vacuum pump... Yet it was still giving me issues with idling down far too often(I know, that's a separate issue, but I'll work on that later when I find another AC-VSV). Charlie Cool get in there and did something, and it HELPED, but it's still cycling too long. Either way, for over a year, I've had ICE COLD air again, so my trips on the 40 to Havasu, AZ have been MUCH nicer the last few times! lol.... I mention this because I FEEL like he was telling me that, THAT UNIT, under the dash, has something simultaneous to do with the Idle Up Feature.
Sorry, I'm sure none of that's helpful, lol... Just pointing out a couple things that MIGHT be having issues in your rig/that you can at least check out, right?
Also, I'm pretty sure that system will NOT run once you drop below a certain #-level of charge. the strange thing with mine was, it would intermittently work. It was like it had JUST BARELY enough to kick on the compressor at times(which will not allow the clutch to engage if it's below a certain # of pressure), ..and at other times it wouldn't. This only went on for a few weeks(2-3) and then CAPUT! lol. It was HOT AIR from there! lol.
Ask your brother about the adjustable unit in the dash for 'cycle time', "Can the AC relay in the dash clip out for some reason? Especially related to 'highway speed' or lack thereof?" ..... At least ASK him, right, the guy could at least ponder on it for ya for a minute, no? As much as I want to front snap my brother to the face at times.... I would NOT let him go without AC in 100*F weather for the whole summer! lol.
Sorry man, I wish I could actually give you an answer(as I'VE BEEN THERE, AND IT SUCKS!), But, alas, I just don't know enough about that strange phenomenon you're having. Too bad you're not near Torrance, CA... Charlie would look at it for ya FOR SURE, and INSTANTLY, most likely, tell you what's wrong. He was installing the AC systems in FACTORY TOYOTAS, AT THE DEALER, here in the SOUTH Bay, CA, FROM 1981-89 or so, in all of our old betties! lol)

Thanks for the replies
Ill just keep driving it like this. As long as the temp doesn't reach pass 105 ill b fine going to work and back lol.
On the way to work today I put the air to recirculate and it surprisingly dint die after I got off the highway maybe I just found something.
I've tried running it on recirculate before when it doesn't want to work and it wouldn't so this does beat me.
well see how it goes if I have time maybe ill replace the whole thing under my glove compartment.

mine was having similar issues compressor was engaged, idle up but no cold air, gauges showed too much pressure on high side and pulling a vacuum on low side, would not take 134, turned out to be a bad expansion valve on the cooling unit under dash, vac'd system, replaced valve, recharged system and cold air again, however my condensor fan gave up but as long as my electric fan runs i have cool a/c, also on v6 auto, there is an a/c cut off relay that is affected by engine temp. hope this helped

Note, There is a RPM control knob on the AC Amplifier behind the glovebox to also control when the pump comes on.
On my 92 Runner it was easy to see and adjust from behind the glovebox but the 92 ExCab it was at the very top of the AC exchange duct.
The adjuster under the hood is only and idle up.
On a stick adjusting it to stay on at idle wont hurt but on and auto it will bogg very badly and your lousy gas milage hits bottom.
