So i've read a lot about doing disc brake conversions on the 3rd Gen T4R rear axle. I've seen everything from subu brakes, plymouth brakes, ford brakes, etc. I looked at the rear axle of my friends 4th Gen T4R and it seems like those brakes can be put on the 3rd Gen T4R axle. They seem to have the cable parking brake, they are 6 - 5.5 lug pattern. Does anybody have any guidance, knowledge on this subject. I'm currently having my T4R SAS'ed and while its all apart and my axle is being beefed up, I want to do the swap, but I want good information to prevent major problems. Thanks.

I would do this in a New York minute, but I think the axle widths are different. If not much, I guess one could always add the appropriate spacers to the front in order even out the F-R track.

The drum brakes are the one item that I've loathed in the nearly eleven years of ownership.

do the 4th gen rear brakes have the cable operated parking brake? I can always have a bracket made to mount the calipers... but the key will be the parking brake cable assembly

you'll need to make changes to the axle with regards to the mounts for the shocks and lateral control rod, and the spring perches. also you might need to check the abs sensors

 

can you elaborate... I'm getting my truck SAS'ed right now and I can make those changes relatively easily when it'll already be getting the chop.

so you need to get the measurements from the 3rd gen axle so you can have them properly relocated

 

I think (could be wrong) that you guys are missing the objective here. The OP is looking to keep his 3rd Gen axle, just looking to mount the disc brakes from a 4th Gen on the 3rd Gen axle. OP, am I correct in this?

sorry about that.. misunderstood your post. yes it can be done. there are 4 ears at each end of the rear axle housing that holds the axle shaft assembly/backing plate. you need to trim the upper two ears and weld on new ones that will match the bolt holes on the 4th gen's backing plate. you can then bolt on the rear disc brake assembly including the parking brake which is the drum-in-disc type.
