gears for 39.5" tires

first off- this site is awesome!! i've been reading up on all things 2nd gen 4runner related and this has been hands down the best place for info. started my plans for my rig about a month before i bought it- you guys rock!

my rig as of now
95 4runner sr5, 3.0, sas, crappy lift job, manual locking hubs up front, detroit locker in rear with 4.88 gears, 16.5" wheels, 39.5" swamper iroks(damn near bald) planning on gettin it all set up for trails and rock crawling when i move to colorado.(ft campbell now) also as my DD too

MY QUESTION-
what gears would be best to keep running these iroks? already got new suspension lined up-4 to 5" suspension with a 2" bodylift to make room for the 3.4 motor swap thats obviously needed. can i regear it now or just suck it up and regear it once i do the motor swap and put in the arb air lockers?

thanks for your time- SGT BO

Do you have a manual trans? If so Id say hold out for the motor swap.

Well theres where all your powers going. That autos a dog. A 5speed swap will make a big difference, but a mini 40 is a big tire...

I'd say run 5:71 because they are not weak like posted above.

Go for it. You got a lot of arguing to do with lots of people that have blown them.

The pinion gear for 5.71's is smaller then the shaft. Thats why their structurally weak. All other gear sets the gear is larger than the shaft. Take a look at those gears, you'll see what I'm talking about. Their weak gears compared to 5.29's.

If you remove the thirds yourself, buy the gears, and give them to a shop, aboot $1100. Thats a high number, I've found what cheeper.

I have never run the 5:71's I use 5:29's but as far as the original poster goes I doubt he will be pushing his rig too much to where the 5:71's will break, especially with a 3.slow

It aint the HP its the torque. You can break axles with a 5 horse. The 3.slow will break stuff just as easily as any motor. But, the auto is a little easier on things IMO. Point is the 5.71's are a bad idea if your gonna run anything near 40's

Your better off with 5.29's and dual cases, and oh ya, a 5 speed.
