85 4runner vs 3rd gens

Im in the market for a 4runner and Ive been looking at the 3rd gen 4runners and also the old 85's. I have done my research for both but havent seen enough to make up my mind. I like the 3rd gen with the 5 speed but there are very few in good condition with low miles in my area and it would cost more to upgrade than a 1st gen. Also I found a 1985 4runner 22re with 120k miles never lifted or abused hes asking $4500.

So Id like to know if you guys think its worth it to wait around for a 3rd gen or jump on the classic? I wont be rock crawling, just alot of mud and snow, with some minor trails. Im also worried there wont be enough power with the 22re vs the 3.4. Im only 18 so the creature comforts wont really bug me but kinda want something with balls, I like the supercharger option on the 3g.

Thanks for your opinion.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for? Why does it have to be an '85? The first gen runner body style went to at least '89?? But it was IFS. And I am guessing the front suspension style doesn't matter to you, since you're looking at a 3rd gen anyway.

If it were me, and based on what I am concluding, I would find a 89-ish, 1st generation body style 4runner, that came equipped with the 3.0 V6, and probably swap it out for the 3.4.

If you have to have a solid font axle for wheeling, then do a SAS when funds permitted...

It would be cool and i bet the power to weight ratio would be good but I work 5 days a week and couldnt sacrifice my vehicle for a week or more. I actually like the 3rd gens look better but the simplicity of the 1st gen appeals to me, plus it would be easy to lift and so on. Are you guys ever disappointed with the 22re's power?

going up hills , and accelerating fast would be the weakness of my 22re 4runner , and im running 100 % stock tire size 225/75/15 . leave your self extra time to get places, that require you to be on time. I think a 22re only puts out 110 hp or so.. so thats prob why

get the 1st gen, gear it, and work on the motor a bit. if you plan on taking in the woods, it's far better than a 3rd gen.

but 4500 is steep

I think Im leaning towards the 3rd gen because I wont be rock crawling and I want more power the 110 hp. What kinda miles is too high? I really want a 5 speed and I found this but it looks a little beat on.

its 20 mins from my house he has recipts for the rebuild and a new cluch at around 10k. Is the body damage fixable with some bondo? A buddy of mine owns a paint shop and would help at cost.

I would say go with the appeal I bought a 98, put all of the supercharger goodies, fuel upgrades, OME lift, etc. Made 250whp. Two months ago I sold it, bought an 89 1st gen, and am currently swapping a 1uz 4.0v8. Like you, the 1st gen appealed to me so much more and I am happy. And listening to 80's music is much cooler in the 1st gen

'85 4Runner stock w/ 120K ? Dang, that will hold it's value. Easy to mod, fun to drive, plenty of parts, etc. That's the best year too, best straight axle, fuel injected. Nice cam, header and exhaust, fun engine especially w/ the 5 spd. Way cooler than a 3rd gen.

The later trucks will be more comfort and more power.

The white '97 looks beat up. Find something cleaner from someone who babied their rig. Like the '85 !

That thing is pretty beat up, I have an 88 PU and a 98 Limited 4Runner, I love my 4runner for DD, gets the same MPG as the 22re 5 speed PU and the 4Runner is an auto. Came with a locker from the factory, has plenty of power, I find myself having to back off as my rear tires are wearing a little faster from unsuspecting burn outs after driving the 22re. 4Runner has a moonroof, leather interior and is the best vehicle for daily driver/weekend wheeler in my opinion. You are 18 years old, plenty of time to build a nice wheeler in the future.

Yea I got some more pictures of that 97 its worse than it looks.. I think I can come up with some extra cash and try to get this, or something along those lines

The only thing with the 22re is lack of power and that would make me loose interest i believe. The 3rd gen have a good power to efficiency ratio imo.

Or I could go with this one and spend the extra money in suspendsion and stuff..

I cant make up my mind!
