I am fighting a PO340 code on this 96 T-100. It has come to me after being at 2 other shops. It shows signs of front end collision in it's past so is a fun one. I replaced the timing belt and water pump, and yes, I have checked the alignment of the crankshaft, and camshaft marks. All are right on. I just replaced the camshaft position sensor. When I crank it up, the engine runs 2-3 seconds then dies. In trying to do wavelength patterns with a Modis scantool I unhooked the "black" and the "white" wires at the ECM to test for wavelength pattern there (thinking I might be fighting a broken wire between sensor and ECM. The engine then ran with the camshaft sensor unhooked. I hooked the white wire back up and it continued to run, but when the black wire is hooked up it immediately dies. Looking for a pinout description or someone good at diagnosing how the 3.4 system works and what I should look for. This one has me beaten down, but not quitting! Thanks

 

Was any maintenance performed prior to this condition? Did you test the black wire resistance to ground?

Looking at my 1998 EWD...I'm not seeing there is a black or white wire from the sensor to the ECM. I see that the wire colors are pink and light blue. Pink is the G+ signal and the light blue is the NE- signal. The camshaft position sensor wire harness should be a shielded jacket that is tied to the brown wire.

The EWD shows a black wire that goes to the #1 knock sensor and a white wire that goes to the bank 1 sensor 1 heated O2 sensor.

It has been through 2 other shops prior to me getting ahold of it so I know it will be that much more difficult for me to find the problem. Asking the other shops what they did isn't an option, they don't remember at this point (already asked). I thought the same thing about the wiring, except the vehicle tells a different story. The 96 T100 is a very specific vehicle from what I have learned. I looked at wiring diagrams from Tacoma and 4Runners and colors didn't match so I didn't even compare them. I now have a true 96 T100 diagram but I need to get ahold of a pinout that describes what values, ground, or battery voltages I need to look for at the ECM. I would love to try another ECM but with it being a one year only (from what I am told) they are tougher to come by. I would be willing to purchase one if someone has one (96 T100 3.4 liter 5 speed 4x4). Thanks for replying, starting to think it wasn't listed any longer

 

What is the location of the camshaft sensor?
