I was driving my 1995 4runner to work this morning and all the sudden my RPMs dropped even with my foot on the pedal. And when the RPMs shot down the service engine light came for a little bit. So sticking to my main question would a 95' with OBD1 shoot a SEL for a fuel pump or is it something else causing it?

 

Checking the code(s) would be a good start.

And no the fuel pump won't throw any codes.

 

Would the ECM store the cod it gave off this morning? b/c its not giving off a code right now. It just gave the SEL for like 4 secs. this morning and thats it

 

Probably wont store it in a OBD1 system and i pretty sure there isn't a code for a fuel pump but still check them.

 

Yes, all codes are stored until the battery is disconnected or the EFI fuse is removed for 30-60 seconds. Some codes go straight to memory and don't even illuminate the check engine light.

A lean fuel mixture code will occur if you fuel pump takes a dump.

 

I'm praying its the fuel pump b/c I wouldn't know what else to do. It died on me a second time today at a stop light. Then when I tried to crank it again right away it didn't even try the starter just ran. Then I sat there for about 10 minutes with the key out of the ignition then tried canking it again. Then it fired up no problem.

 

Next time it does this, crack the line going to the cold start injector, if there is pressure, you can pretty much rule the fuel system out. If there is no pressure, then refer to the fsm for the diagnostic procedures of the fuel system. There are a number of things that can cause the fuel to shut off other than a faulty fuel pump. AFM, TPS, COR to name a few....

 

It could also be that you need a new fuel filter? Not that the filter itself would send a code, but maybe a lean mixture being sensed.. Correct me if i'm wrong?

 

The first thing I replaced was the fuel filter. And that didn't change a thing. I don't know much about toyotas so thats why I'm kind of cluless. I use to working on chevys.

 

How did you check for codes? Just curious cuz I never seen the cel light up in my rig, and not flash a code after.....

 

Well I wasn't able to check with the OBD set up orileys auto parts had. So I don't know what codescame up. But I find that really weird that it came on then just turned off. But I'm going to drop the fuel tank tommorrow and inspect it. I have a feeling that its rusty b/c I'm pretty sure my 4runner sat for a while and condensation build up in the tank. I only bought the 4runner b/c it has the original 71,000 miles and b/c it has the 4.88 gears.

 

Then you should know exactly what a bad fuel pump acts like

The fuel pump cutting out would most likely throw a code for a lean condition like stated already, it could have came on though because the RPM's got so low and the motor was ready to die. I would check some other things first before just throwing a fuel pump at it like checking pressure, you could be doing a ton of work for nothing.

 

I've been looking a little more. I'm going to test my fuel pressure vsv tomorrow and see what happens. I just need to get it up and running by monday b/c my diesel mech. classes start early in the morning.

 

Dude... Check for codes!! Under the hood, on pass side is a little grey box that says "diagnostics" flip the cap over, inside the cap it shows what pins are where.. take a small piece of electrical wire, and jump the te1 and e1, then get into the truck and watch the cel flash, if its just a constant flashing... there are no codes, if it flashes twice, pause then 3 more times(just an example) then a long pause, and repeat you code is 23, or if could flash several codes with long pauses in between... Do that b4 throwing parts at it... TRUST ME... I have spent too much time and $ just throwing parts at vehicles in the past, its best to diagnose the problem, then fix it... Just my $0.02
