I searched for this earlier and didn't really find much for later trucks. I've got a really clean but 221k mile 4Runner sport that's an automatic. It was my wife's DD for 10 years and last week we bought her a new Venza. So the 4Runner is for sale but I haven't had any bites yet. I'm going to give it a bit more time but I was thinking in the back of my mind that if it doesn't sell I could sell my 05 Tacoma and build this up a little. But I hate the automatic in it. My Tacoma is an auto too and in that it doesn't bother me. I've done plenty of auto to 5 speed swaps on older vehicles so I know the mechanical part of it is no problem. I'm just concerned of wiring issues with an OBDII vehicle. Anyone done it? I know 5 speed 4runners are pretty rare but there should be plenty of 5 speeds/transfercases/driveshafts (if they are even different) in junkyards here in the northeast now with all the Tacomas Toyota bought back.

i hate to tell you this but none of the Toyota frame recalls ever will see the likes of a yard.

Go direct to the crusher do not pass go!! So that year Tacoma parts are very hard to find!!

 

Very cool thanks for the link. Actually doesn't look any more complicated than the 5 speed swap I did on my BMW last year. A little wiring and everything works. It's great to know this is an option if it doesn't sell. I've actually been wanting to do a mild build on this truck for years but my wife wanted it totally stock. So that's how it stayed as it was her rig. But if I sold the Tacoma (which would be easy) I could see this thing on 33's with a 5 speed before long. My FJ40 is a fun rig on local trails but it sucks for comfort and on the wallet driving it anywhere. Unfortunately I do need a pickup quite often so chances are I'll just sell it.

 

I found that turning up the line pressure on the transmission and installing stiffer springs works wounder for the shift quality on the stock automatic. Muchmore fun to drive.

Combine that with a high stall converter and it is MUCH much more fun to drive.

A 5 speed would be more fun but the problem is finding all the parts you need to do it for a reasonable cost. Pretty much have to find a very rare manual parts truck.

You could up the line pressure and get stiffer springs for maybe $100 in fluids, might be worth looking into. If you do it, don't mess around, get the stiffest springs you can find and turn the pressure up all the way. Wasn't until I did that that the shifting really got better.

They seem good, but I can't get ANYONE to respond if they have any experiece with either of these kits.

 

Pretty sure that is what the shop used in mine although I didn't see the brand. Used in combo with turning the line pressure all the way up it works good, makes it a lot more fun to drive, they should come like that stock.

 

There is also an article in a past 4WDTO mag that showed a company in Australia that deals with Toy autos. I think indicated for an FJ80, but they said they dealt a lot with the A340s as well. I dont know if it's the same auto that's in the Runners but it might be worth researching....

 

There are some companys in the US as well, IPT and level10 are the biggest names and if supercharged I think they are worth it for sure.

In an NA truck though new springs and upping the pressure work great.
