That is the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer. Personally I'd replace it.

Its not that it is loose, the harmonic balancer is bonded together and they can sometimes come apart and that is what yours did, no other way around it but replacing it.

don't forget to buy a NEW CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT!! hhahaa! don't re-use your old one and torque it correctly.

I found a new balancer for my 3.4 at toyotapartscheap.com for less than just about anyone else. They are kinda spendy...

URD or LCE might have some 'performance' ones if you want to go that route, not that much more expensive in some cases. just a thought.

I've re-used mine before and have never had any problems. A little blue loctite goes a long way.

Have you had it come loose or this this just a precaution you are trying to pass on?

I would not drive that, the pulley has the belt that runs your alternator, water pump and cooling fan. Driving it will overheat the engine, possibly causing major engine damage.

Yep, thats the pulley, you have power steering so the third pulley on the end is held on by 4 bolts and then you can remove it and swap it to your new harmonic balancer.

Since you are already in ther and have the balancer out, you will want to consider replacing the front main seal.

When mine went, it had like 150K miles. I replaced my belts and seal with new only because it was already part of the stuff taken off. I am not afraid to do more maintenance now if it saves me a headache later.

CS pulley is the hard part, do what ever you can while youre in there! And it is blue loctite for your bolt, the 5vz's use red hi-strenth and more torque for some reason....?

I have one that I would give away free but if you saw my thread, you will see it is not wanted by anyone other than someone who needs a really heavy paperweight!

Hope you get her fixed up, lot's of help on here.

and thanks for posting my CS debocle link up for him already rworegon.

I would 'agree' that an old bolt will work most of the time (as that is what usually happens anyway) but even with loctite and torque, why take a chance? the FSM calls this a 'non-reusable' part like a gasket. wise advice is all I will say.

I believe the washer on the CS pulley is concaved so that it does help keep pressure on that shaft rotating a billion times a minute, once you take it off and re-install, you just lost that extra grab.

loctite, torque, loctite, torque......

anyway, I'll let you get back to the task at hand....

Seal, Oil (For Timing Chain or Belt Cover)

You may need to adjust settings for your rig:

Something like in this first post, assuming your pulley has a pair of holes that the bolts can thread into:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...l-tool-186081/

and once you are holding the pulley, a 1/2" breaker bar does the trick for me on the crank bolt.
