1988 FourRunner 4x4 buying help!
#1
Okay, so I'm buying a '88 four runner, 4x4 and the man I'm buying it from wants $1000 For it, there isn't anything wrong with it and it seems to be in fair shape. Is it worth the $1000? Also, I could buy an '85 Four Runner with a 4 inch lift with 35 boggers on it for $800, BUT, it jumped time and i have no idea how messed up the engine is..

The 88' is well worth the 1000$. Hell, I just paid 2200 for an 87, that's half rotten, blew a brake line today in it, and a lot of other little thing wrong with it. Maybe just because they're a bit more rare up here in Canada, As far as the 85' goes depend on how the lift is done might be worth it, see if you can find some more info about it, Is it geared? is it just blocks under it, or done properly? I would worry about those things first and the shape it is in , the engine isn't anything a saturday and a case of beer couldn't fix!

I'm new to this site but not new to toyotas. Lol. Jumping time could go either way. It could be as simple as re-timing the cam or it could be a top end rebuild, having to pull the head off and replace bent valves but in my experience if it jumped time, there's been some high rpm's on that motor and without being able to drive it, you could get yourself into a pretty expensive situation. Personally I would go with the other one and try to talk the guy down. Sounds like the lifted one is a running project.

Yeah, the man said that the valves were bent to hell and back so I'm going with the '88. Found out that its missing a front locking hub and the back power glass. Easy fixes for a saturday.

I agree, well worth 1000 for it, even though the rear is sagging a bit.
And I have to laugh: you have the same side mirrors as mine... and people say those are rare.

Mind you, that photo is a few years old. Since that, I've installed a 4" ProComp lift, new rear leafs and the truck is now more leveled out.
