Got a 1997 Tacoma with the 2.4 motor. I was driving one day about 6 months ago and everything was normal and when I started it the next morning the power steering sounded like it was low on fluid and had no power steering but when i checked it it was fine. Looking into it a little more i found my return line was kinked so i put a new one on it and still sounded low on fluid and no power steering. So i replaced pump thinking it may have burned up. Now i can start truck and power steering makes a hell of a noise and i can turn it lock to lock about 5 times and it goes away and everything sounds normal and i get power steering back until you turn it off for a couple of hours. When you start it back up the sound is back but goes away again after some lock to lock moves. I replaced fluid with AFT when i put new pump on. Just wondering what you guys thought it could be. maybe a leak in rack and pinion that sucks in air. There is no leak cause i have never had to add fluid yet. I have been trying to fix this on my own and haven't been able to yet

 

Sounds like you just have air in the system, read this thread
