need help with my newly aquired 4 runner

i just bought an 86 4 runner 22 re auto. had a major miss and no power when brought home. checked timing and it seemed to be way to far advanced like 60 degrees. after going over everything i could think of, found cam gear was off by 1 link. Put back together everything, looks normal with timing now but engine will not run. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Now that the valve timing is correct you may have to adjust the ignition timing. The ignition timing may be off by a tooth. Also check the firing order and make sure that the plug wires are in the correct position on the distributor cap and that the roter is pointing at the number one plug wire when number one cylinder is at top dead center then set the timing with a timing light according to the field service manual.
When you checked the timing did you short the T and E1 on the test connector with a paper clip? Page IG-15 step 3 of the Factory Service Manuel.

thanks, yea i did all that an checking the ign. timing while cranking with the starter it looks good, right at tdc. ive got good spark, got fuel in the rail, injectors geting pulse, good even conpression in all the cylinders, adjusted valves to spec while i had cover off. but yet still not even a slightest signe of life. any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Distributor 180* off? My thought anyway, being as it had jumped time and wasnt where it was supposed to be initially, thats my only other thought. You tested spark and so forth as well?

Yea, Lycanistic and I are thinking along the same lines. Just because you have spark does not mean that you are getting it at the right time. Also since timing is what you messed with then I would not suspect a fuel issue. Hmm. Did you get all of the vacuum lines back correctly? How about the air flow meter. Is it plugged in and the cross over pipe connected.
Sorry if this seems basic but I'm throwing spit wads here and it wont all be gold.
Both front ground wires connected? Any wires get knocked off of a sensor like under the TPS or anywhere else?

Just curious, are you getting anything out of the tailpipe while cranking? Felt with hand. Trying to rule out a restricted/clogged cat.

thanks all, im puting in the distrib. at 12oclock the roter is ending up on the num1 wire, with the crank pully on tdc. an the num 1 cyl on comp stroke ive tryed it with the dist. one tooth one way or the other an still nothen. i marked the vac line good an am prety shure i got them all back right. ill have to check the air flow meter, an what im geting at the exaust im not to shure bout that. it just dont make sense it ran with the timing out of wac, but now that everything looks like its where it should be, i got nothin

I have seen motors out of order (spark plug wires) and advanced timing, that missed, hissed, sputtered but still ran. I would hate to think that it is something simple as that which is being overlooked.

You did what I would have done. The only thing left is double checking the valve timing since that is where your trouble began. Did you remove the timing cover to check that the chain was on the right tooth on the crank gear? Is it the original timing set? I am not suggesting that you remove the timing cover but asking how do you know that the gear timing is correct now? When the crank and #1 cylinder are at DC are the rocker arms in the TDC position? If the timing is correct I would think that if you checked them with a feeler gage at TDC then moved the crank that the rocker clearence should only get tighter.
Does anyone know a good way to check valve timing with out removing the timing cover?

the bad thing is i know none of the history on it, got it from a young guy that only had it 6 month b 4 me, he couldnt tell me much. no i didnt pull the timing cover, but was told that the crank, crank gear and crank pully are all keyed so thay have to b right, so im asuming that with pully timing mark at tdc, an the cam gear timing mark at 12oclk, the timing chain should be a ok. right?

Yea I know that the crank gear is in the correct position, but is the chain on the correct tooth of the crank gear?
We could use some input from some other yotatech guys because I am running out of ideas and this guy needs to get his truck on the road so that he can enjoy some Toyota ownership.

Lining up the cam gear is not that simple. It is not 12:00 and 12:00 because the passenger side of the chain has slack. Download the Factory Service Manuel from the link in my signature and check out this link to learn how to properly set the timing.

You should be able to do it from the valve cover.
