83 pickup WONT START??

hi i just bought a 83 toyota pickup, 2wd, carb engine and i put new oil, oil filter, spark plugs. I know it needs a tune up because it has been sitting over in riverside, ca and looks like it needs work. Sometimes when im driving the idle will get stuck and hi rev until i give it some gas for the idle to go down. Im thinking it might need an idle adjustment (not sure how to do that, never dealt with carb engines)

and 2nd thing is, now it wont start and will die on me when im driving. It sounds like it wants to start, it will make noise like it wants to, but wont. The battery seems to work because lights are coming on and in and out of truck but wont turn over. Any suggestions guys??

also if anyone has a right front fender and bumper please let me know, im in ORANGE COUNTY, CA

If you have any mechanical ability get a Factory Service Manual and start at the beginning to get your truck running. If you have no mechanical ability, find a friend or good mechanic who knows old yotas (22R engine with carb) and get it running. Might need a carb rebuild or just clean fuel if it has been sitting for a long time.

Just because your lights come on doesn't mean your battery has enought amps to start the engine. Have the battery load tested if you don't know how.

Good luck!

either battery is pooched or alternator isn't charging properly. especially if it dies on you and then you jump start it and it runs then it'll be the alternator

Yep, should have mentioned what 83Toyota said--check alternator in addition to battery.

Put a fuel filter on it then clean everything you can see under the hood and underneath the engine/trans. Can't hurt and you'll thank me later.
