Wiring a 4-flat trailer plug to 1983 pickup
Got a bit of an emergency here, and couldn't find much via search. I need to hook a 4-flat plug to my truck, and am at a loss as to how to do it since the turn signals are separate from the brake lights.
Do I need a special kind of wire kit or will a standard 4-flat work? I need this trailer to be hooed up tomorrow and would appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks!

Thanks a lot, man. If my initial search had helped, I wouldn't have asked.
BTW, I was on the site earlier on my phone, which is a total PITA, and trying to get an answer before the stores closed. Been on lots of sites where newbs come in with questions, and its nice to help them out even if there is a search function. Now I'm the newb. I mean, if you're gonna take the time to tell me to use the search, why not just answer the question?

If you have a auto zone you will need a tail light converter they should have in stock:

Seriously, thanks. My Yota is my first Yota or any foreign vehicle, for that matter. This is my first time messing with these separate turn signals. Again, I really appreciate your guidance here. Take care!

Ya no problem it really wasnt much, haha I wish I could take the day off but it doesn't look like it, I deal with this stuff for a living so I'll be at it bright and early! Good luck installing that converter it's pretty straightforward so you should be fine!

I have a similiar issue and was wondering if you might lend me a hand. I got a 92 ext cab 2.4 cyl 22re 128000 Ive had it about 6 months and love it. I want to tow my boat with it and every time i hook my boat trailer to my pigtail the left running light and blinker work, all the trailer lights blink fast when i turn my right blinker on. also my right blinker blinks twice as fast as my left without the trailer being hooked up and no my bulbs arent out they all work.

well my truck already has a pig tail and with the right hand blinker going crazy i went ahead and pulled the back right tail light out to check it out. I found a small black switch box with a couple relays on it. with that some poor wiring ( done by the previous owner) so i remade the connections and it still acts crazy. To answer your question. I think that black relay was the convertor your talking bout.

I do believe your right! I checked out the link and I'm gonna order myself one. I will let you know how it turns out. I appreciate your help. Do you think this could also be the reason my right turn signals are blinking as twice as fast as the left ones?

Okay, so here's what ended up happening. I was due to meet a guy about 50 miles away to buy a 4-wheeler the next day after I posed my question. I already knew the wheel wells were too close together to allow the 4-wheeler to fit in the back of the Yota, and didn't want to chance any problems with loading it up. Late Sunday morning, a friend gave me an old trailer that I basically had to pull from a field and bring back from the dead. It needed metal work on the front to accommodate a new tongue, as well as a complete rewiring job. I also knew that my truck did not have a pig tail, and that it would not readily accept a 4-flat plug. Knowing I still had all this work to do, and that a trip to the vehicle inspection facility (they write the ticket that verifies the trailer is homemade so you don't get jacked for sales tax) and DMV was going to be in order the next morning, I felt I was under an extremely tight schedule. That is why I posted my question that day.
So what I ended up doing was this: Already strapped for cash because of the $3k 4-wheeler purchase price, I decided to skimp on the converter, and ended up wiring my truck up with a 5-flat plug instead, using the extra blue wire for the brake light. Since the trailer needed all new lights and wires anyway, I just bought an extra light that would serve as a dedicated brake light. With a 5-flat system wired onto the trailer, my problem was solved. Everything ended up working out quite beautifully. The cool thing is, I can just splice in a 4-flat plug onto the trailer by simply ignoring the 5th wire that goes to the dedicated brake light. That way, my buddy who gave me the trailer can use it with his truck, or I can use a common adapter if I end up putting a tow package on the wife's Traverse. Like I said, beautiful!
Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you guys. I want to again thank those who offered their help for this situation. Take it easy!
