Ambitious1's 1984 Pick up build thread

So I bought this truck off CL from a kid who did a GOOD job... I just want some things a lil different.

I bought it with:
5" Skyjacker lift (blox in rear/pushpull steering)
Complete 22re swap from an 86 (zero cut wires according to PO)
Nice bob job, with just enough frame left for when I add 63's.
Bilstien 5100's
Came with 1 4.56 third.
And really thats about it.

I've bought:
14" shocks
Another 4.56 third
2 Lock Rights
F250 shock towers
Sky's 63's kit
Sky's High Steer/HD ifs box mount
Knuckle rebuild kit
F/R u bolt flip kits
Boomerangs
Rear shock hoop/lower shock mounts

Ummmm I think that's it....

I will build bumpers, it needs them.... BAD....

My goal is a good trail rig that I can DD. I'll end up with 63's, RUF, high steer, and a lil better gearing, with traction.

I'm considering using F150 springs instead of the 63's, but the chevy's are so damned praised I don't know why I'd try anything different.

These pics are from the PO, I haven't had a chance to get any of my own yet, but here she is.....

Looks like a great start! I was debating on running the 150s instead of the 63s but what the hell I can always go with the smaller 150s Later if for some reason the 63s don't work out . I plan on taking out 14-15 inches of my bed and leave just enough frame for the 63s. What are you plans for cases?

Good looking truck, looks really clean. It's refreshing to hear someone say that the PO actually did a GOOD job. Best of luck with your changes!

No plans yet... I'm gonna get the 4.56's/lockers in on Monday, and probably not do much more for a while. Rear springs/highsteer hopefully by mid-January.

There's a full 4"+ behind the shackles, from the research I've done, this should be enough. I'm leanin' toward the F150's more and more though.....

Sooooo..... A little BIO.... I don't know it all.... I do know how to search.... I still have questions....

My high steer will be here in the next couple of days. I am intending on puttin' RUF. If I install the histeer and mount the IFS box all the way forward on the frame BEFORE goin RUF, will there be any issue with the draglink? I'm thinking no, but if someone knows more than me, please share the info.....

As it sits, the Skyjacker 5" fronts seem to flex fairly well. I want to go RUF to move the axle forward. What would YOU do?

If I leave the SJ 5" packs in the front, I'm thinkin I'd probly want the F150's, the reading I've done tells me the truck would sit more level than if I went with the 63's.

If I go RUF, then I'd want the 63's, the reading I've done on that tells me that combo sits pretty level.

I guess my Q is..... Should I go:

A) RUF/63's (should be level, and a lil' lower than pictured above?)
B) 5"SJ/F150's (should be level, bout the same height as above?)
C) 5"SJ/63's (saggy butt?)

I'd like to run the 33's but be a lil' bit lower, and flex like crazy. I know all this is really my personal preference. This is the first Toyota I've built on so I'm counting on others experience to enlighten me.

You answered your own question here.

I would say to mount the ifs steering box after you do the hy-steer and RUF (if you go that route), so that you know exactly where it needs to go. Moving reinforcement plates and drilling MORE holes in the frame is not something you want to do.
If you choose to keep your current front springs, but still want your axle moved forward, you could run axle relocation plates from 4crawler. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/...elocationPlate

I'd reccomend a flat pitman arm when doing ruf and high steer. I've seen many people have problems with clearance when doing that setup with regular drop pitman. Go flat , push box as far froward as possible and tilt box to clear frame. Pitmans aren't cheap when buying them separate , no additional cost when you choose flat with a hi steer kit.

Good info on the pitman arm, I have a TG drop arm already, hope the SKY's high steer kit comes with a flat one?! There was no option when ordering from them.

Lockers, and knuckle rebuild kit landed on the porch today... Monday will be the install day... 4.56's and f/r lockers and rebuilt knuckles...

When I ordered my tg hi steer it gave me the option of pitman arm. Where did you get your knuckle rebuild kit from? I gotta do that soon.

Boo.... I'm frustrated.... I bought 4 cyl Lock Rights, and have V6 4.56 thirds.... That was well planned out...

OK, so now I've installed the gears, OPEN....

The truck started missing for no apparent reason. Great. I've narrowed it down to fuel delivery, First I'm checking the splices that signal the injectors to fire. They are mildly corroded, but not broken. I will solder them and put shrink tube on them just on general principal. If that doesn't work, I will replace the injectors with some rebuilt ones.... Fingers crossed....

Update.....

Chased my tail for a little while on the miss on #1 cyl.....
Replaced ignition stuff, narrowed it down to fuel delivery. Checked and soldered the troublesome OEM splices that signal the injectors to fire, no luck there. Went ahead and pulled the injectors, they looked like this.....
1-4 left to right....

1-2, notice the nozzle on #2 is cracked.

3-4

All the O-rings/rubber was shot on the injectors, and 2 of the plastic plugs were bout half disintegrated on disassembly. I soldered new pigtails on the bad plugs and replaced all 4 injectors with rebuilds even though only 1 wasn't firing.

I bought this thing so I wouldn't have to be tinkering with crap unless I wanted to. I'm hopeful it will continue to run flawless for some time now. Also thinkin' it'll probly get better mileage. The timing was off by about 7-9 degrees, EVERY bolt/nut on the exhaust manifold was loose, it had a 180 thermostat in it (now 193), and the valves were slightly out of adjustment/valve cover was leaky. All this is fixed now.

I can get back to working on the susp/steering....

Also decided I'll probly just buy a spool for the rear and run the front open. The 4cyl Lock-Rights I bought will likely end up in my '83 along with 4.37's. Looking for a V6 spool.....

I know I know..... Trust me I know.......

I have 63's on my shelves, and hi-steer, and boomerang shackles, and shock mounts and........... A whole buncha stuff really.....

Doesn't really do me much good on the shelf I know..... And there's not much worse than actually having EVERYTHING I need to make my truck a lot better than it is, and not being able to install any of it.

I need to run some 220 out to my garage, so I can actually use my welder, and my plasma, and my compressor....

I'm gettin by with what I have to work with right now.
