i have a 99 and i need more power, i cant pull anything. i have a deckplate mod and thats about it, well and flowmaster. was thinking about the cold air with K&N and that should do something. was thinking spark plugs, but there is controversy over stock or not, was thinking E3 though. and something about a throttle body spacer. any help would be great. i plan on doing a s/c as soon as i can find one but thats probably not going to happen soon.

 

Little bolt on mods hardly make a difference

 

Supercharger is about the only thing that is probably going to give you what you are looking for

 

If you got headers and a tuner you could get a little power for a bunch of cash, but they would both help down the road when you put the supercharger on...

You got 33's on yours right? Try re-gearing.

true no power, pulling a smaller car trailer empty wouldnt do 70 in 5th.

and yes on 33", and it is geared to 4.56 as of a month or two. that didnt help much.

 

There is absolutely no reason a 3.4 truck pulling an empty trailer should not be able to go 70 on the highway, auto or manual trans that is in good mechanical condition, especially after being regeared to match the tire size change. There isn't much difference between a 4.10 and a 4.56 either. 4.88's would be optimal for 33's if the truck had 4.10's to begin with. Not sure what these gen trucks came with stock though.

 

yeah thats what im thinking too. its stock 4.10, blew the gears out of it, but couldnt get 4.88 because of the price beings i just replaced the clutch not 2 weeks before. it does great by itself but pulling is hit and miss. i can even fell it when i have 4 guys in the truck. wondering if i should take to the toyota here to see if they could tune it.

 

First off all the stuff you listed above is snake oil and will actually cause you to loose power.

The K&N will cause a loss of power, the deckplate is doing the same thing. Better off just removing the elbow on the intake box and putting it back to stock.

spark plugs are a good idea for a tune up but stick to stock plugs, the E3's don't work well.

I would just do a complete tune up and run some seafoam though the motor if I was you. That shouldnet you the biggest gains but won't help much for towing.

Something does seem wrong though. I was able to tow a MASSIVLKY overloaded trailer that was ~7000lb+ when my truck was stock 1000 miles with no problems. I could have gone 70 if I wanted but generally it liked to stay around 60.

You should have no problems at all with an empty trailer.

Really, your options are supercharger or nothing.

 

Hmmmmm I tow with both my 2.5 forester, and 2.7 taco and 4runners......

They both would do 80+ easily....

Maybe you have a trans problem?

I wouldn't put a turbo or supercharger on anything that I knew was supposed to have power right from the gate. I'd be trying to think of what my issue(s) could be first.

somthin is wrong. My 3.4 pulls a 3700 pound camping trailer at 70 with 33's and 4.56 gears. No kidding. But not in 5th. You shoulnt be using 5th towing. Keep it at 65 in 4th and you should be a comfortable 3000rpms with reasonable power to spare. Also occasionally pull my wheeling rig to a local wheeling spot on a car trailer. Handles that pretty good considering its a 5,000 caged yoga on a 1300 pound trailer.

 

i'd start by sticking a pressure gauge on it and see if you have a weak cylinder or two. something's really wrong here.

 

Naw I think you are asking to much out of somthing that is what it is a toyota not a cummins turbo diesel,v6 or not keep it in 4th gear and watch the road.
