Rubbing noise up front when turning cold

Hey all,

First I want to say that I did search for an answer but did not find much in way of an answer. I've got a 93 pickup 4x4. Now that the weather is cold (under 20 degrees) I get a rubbing noise coming from my front suspension (or steering?) when I turn partially - not full lock. The noise actually goes away when I turn to full lock. This only happens until the truck is fully warmed up. The power steering fluid is at a sufficient level and was flushed and replaced a couple months ago. Anyone have any insight?

Thanks

So after driving this morning I have diagnosed a bit further. When turning to the right, the rubbing/binding noise comes from the left wheel area. vise versa for turning left. It does not happen in reverse either. Could it be something with the hubs?

Wheel bearings will make a noise somewhat like a grinding noise when turning, but it sounds to me like you have oversized tires rubbing on mudflaps or pinch weld when turning. It may not be evident while parked either.

What would cause it to stop making the rubbing noise when warm though? I am fairly certain it is not a wheel bearing, as I have had those go out before.

You're right, tires rubbing wouldn't go away when warm. What size tires do you have, just curious. Could you wheel cylinders be sticking a bit and dragging when cold? That shouldn't only occur when turning however.

I am just running the stock tire size. No lift or suspension modification either. All stock as far as I know.

Aftermarket wheels? Sorry to keep pressing the tire subject, but can you nab the tires size when you get uno momento?

I would be suspicious about the power steering pump. The noise you hear could be a PS hose vibrating then goes away after it is warmed up.

^ Good idea. Also my runner's battery wasn't anchored down and physically rubbed on the PS pulley.

Wheels are original and the tire size is 235/75R15. Is there any way to test and see if the PS pump is the culprit?

Short of listening to it while somebody turn the wheel, I'm out of idea, but I'll give you a bump to the top! Perhaps a video or sound clip would help.

Alright, so I got a video of the noise. You'll want to turn your volume up a bit to hear it clearly. This was a left turn, and the noise was coming from the right wheel well area.

Now [I]that is an odd noise. Kinda sounds like your blower motor. I dunno, somebody will have the answer.

Did you check for a cow dying underneath the hood??

Wow that is an ODD noise! If it only happens during turning I would guess the PS pump also. I am, however, no expert on this. Just my $0.02.

Just disconect the p/s belt. If it doesn't do the job, at least you killed one of the posibilies.

Last night I was thinking about it- wondering if it was your power antenna or blower motor? But that's wouldn't explain why it goes away at full lock, etc etc. Still kind of sounds like a tire rubbing on a mudflap or a piece of fender liner. You may have to get somebody to drive, while you hang out of the window/door to try to narrow it down.
