Scrapping a truck...what to keep...

So I'm going to 'retire' my '87 4runner next week. In CA, this means I get paid by the state to scrap my truck. I just picked up an '86 to replace it...nice...

At 410k miles, needle bearing blown on the 5th gear/reverse shaft, and needing a new alternator, it's time for it to go...

So...I'm wondering...what can I pull off to keep as spares for my '86 yet still be able to drive the truck to the boneyard (it has to drive there on it's own power in order to be eligible for 'retirement'...)?

Any suggestions?

Here's what I already know I'm pulling off:

  • manual hubs
  • cap
  • rear window and motor
  • rear tow hitch under bumper - going to swap w/ the setup on my 86 b/c needs to have bumpers to be able to scrap it...
  • one headlight and one taillight
  • radio (why not...might as well...)
  • passenger seat
  • passenger glass and regulator
  • power steering pump and apparatus (assuming I can get a shorter belt to cover for this not being on it)
  • clutch start disengage switch
  • blower motor
  • A/C compressor and parts
  • spare rim/tire
  • parking brake cable (if it's not too much of a PITA to get off...)


Any other suggestions?

The manual hubs can come off with the cv's and you can still drive it believe it or not. You can also pull the front diff as well as the front drive shaft too. If your using your spare tire "winch" or if the 87's works, that can come off too. Someone might be willing to buy that from ya.

As long as your careful and if they are in decent shape you can pull out the shocks too. Just be careful the way you drive around corners.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

If I had a driveway or a garage, I'd consider parting it out...but...don't have either, so need it to go in one package, minus whatever I can pull off...

Pulling off the CVs, the front differential, and the front driveshaft...didn't think I could do more than the front driveshaft...gonna have to to look into this!

yea i was gonna say to pull the front diff and CVs like mentioned above. its still driveable, im drivin on a snapped CV shaft right now. how about the gear shift surround? and maybe the roll bar

pull off all the small parts, sensors, , take out the wiring hardness if it's still good. ecu, starter,alt and the afm.

Did you even read the original post?? "It has to drive there on its own power..."

How about the fenders, a few lug nuts, carpet, dash trim pieces, upholstery, alloy wheels (replace with cheap ones), etc...

I would remove ALL interior trim panels, fuel level sending unit (assuming you can still drive it without it), doors and tailgate.

didn't catch it till i reread it again.

why does it need to be able to drive on it's on? must be some bs law

My 88 just got totaled out.

Is the body & frame on yours in really good shape? How much do you get for "retireing" it?

$1k from the state. The body and frame are pretty straight, but...I'm in CA and you're in NY...

And I need to keep the doors and tailgate and body panels on it - already checked. Was bummed, b/c i did want to keep the tailgate.

And...there are no decent interior trim panels left...

Rollbar = yup, just forgot to list it.

Grill = yup.

Going to do it slowly over the week...take my time, and then next Monday it goes to the boneyard...

I'd try to sell it to someone who wants a buggy after your strip parts. It would make a great platform. Screw helping the state. I hate when states try to dictate what you can and cant drive/have. Thats why I love living in southern Colorado, No emissions and alot of the cops/deputys I know and most are 4wheelers.

swap the body panels that are good on your scrap truck for bad one's on your other truck, pull all the glass you can, window regulators etc... whatever it don't need to run/ state dosen't require to stay, i'd pull!
