Now that the power is back on (we were down for four days but fared better than most since we have a generator and a wood furnace) I'm planning on starting to give my new '91 the TLC it needs to stay on the road for another 150K. Here are my weekend plans:

New battery - The old AAA battery that's in there is scary old, lots of corrosion, etc...so I'll spend a lot of time scrubbing the connections. What is the largest CCA battery I can fit in there? I tend to use my truck for light when scrounging or as a jukebox when loading or unloading wood.

Radiator flush/refill - I was just going to go with regular old NAPA green fluid-anyone know the ratio for winter off hand?

Oil flush/change - The oil looks pretty ugly so I was going to do a Seafoam treatment, drain it, fill with a synthetic, run it for about 1000 miles, drain again, and run for 2000 miles then check the condition of the oil. I think eventually I'll run Valvoline Maxlife once it's all cleaned out. What is the part number for the larger (taller) filter?

Seafoam top end - There is definitely some carbon buildup in the head so this should take care of it.

Air filter - Pretty straightforward. Is there any quick and dirty way of opening up the airbox?

Plugs, wires, cap, (rotor)? - Being a diesel guy for the last 6 years or so I'm out of practice here. What are the ignition pieces I need besides the obvious?

I think that's all I'll have time for tomorrow but I will give the truck a good once over to check what will need replacing soon. I'm thinking the front brakes will need replacing soon and plan to go with the V6/T100 brakes so I'll do a search on that swap. I'm scared to even pull the rear drums off-it's probably pretty ugly in there but those will be on the list. Otherwise if I'm going over the truck with a fine toothed comb what else should I be looking for?

 

Other things I would consider would be:

Fuel Filter
PCV Valve
Thermostat
Radiator Flush

 

T-stat and PCV are easy to find and I'm already doing the flush (any recommendation on fluid ratio?)-where is the fuel filter located?

 

Battery specific stores are the cheapest by far, not your local parts place.

Why spend $$$ on oil you are throwing away? Cheap Dino until you do go synthetic. I'd change oil after seafoam too.

OEM plugs and wires. Aftermarkets are just inferior IMO.

Belts. Hoses. All other fluids.

Lube driveline.

Check tires.

Take pity on a noob...what is Toyota RED? A type of battery?

I thought I remembered that the detergents in synthetics would clean it up faster, but if Wal-Mart Supertech will work just as well I'll go with that. I figure I'll do the top end Seafoam cleaning, then add some directly to the oil, let it idle for 15 minutes drain, and change.

Lucky for me I have a dealer right down the road from me-not sure how they are on price though.

They actually look pretty fresh but I'll give them a closer look.

Where do you guys purchase yout Tune up parts for these 22RE's? I usually shop Rockauto unless its in emergency. I think they have most of the reccomended OEM parts except for the Sumitomo plug wires and Denso Cap and Rotor. Is the dealership my only other option or is there an online source that sells the OEM stuff?

 

I usually add some RESTORE to oil at every oil change and pour some lucas fuel injector cleaner in gas also.
