Stellick's 1985 Pickup Build-Up Thread

Hey all
Picked up this pickup about 3 months ago, knowing that it would need some serious and not so serious work. Its been pretty much just sitting around since I didn't want to risk damaging it. It needs a timing chain BAD.



For now I'm just going to get this girl back on (off) the road. I ordered a bunch of stuff from engnbldr.com today and it should all arrive tuesday or wednesday next week.

Future plans are to make the old gal more capable off road, but still able to haul the occasional junk around the house - as a pickup is meant to! I'll probably run 33's and appropriate gears unless I get a hair brained idea to do some more serious wheelin'

Anyways - I'll be posting up pics of everything when I start diggin around... I'm doing a ton of cleaning and a tons of tests on her tonight, I'll snap off some before's and after's!

EDIT - here are a few tasty "before" pics now that I have photobucket up and running:

I hope you guys see the difference in the front wheels compared to the back wheels.... they all looked black like the fronts, but after a little soap and elbow grease they got shiny, I honestly thought they were painted wheels at first because they were CAKED with nasty.

Sooooo probably have a blown head gasket or a cracked head? Compression test results:
Cylinder 1 - 0ish, with oil 15ish
Cylinder 2 - 120, with oil 140
Cylinder 3 - 30, with oil 40
Cylinder 4 - 125, with oil 145

Probably means I need to just build the whole motor since compression went up with oil drops in the cylinders right?

I'm considering options at this point:
1) Rebuild my entire motor. (need a local shop for bore/hone/head work)
2) Swap an already built 22re in. Theres a guy in Denver that builds these all the time.
3) Swap in a different motor all together. Ive read of about 2 "easy" options here at YotaTech

What would YotaTech like to see lots and lots of pictures of and help me with!? Cuz Ill be needing all your help! Also - if anyone is near Colorado Springs and wants some beers, I'd be willing to trade them for wrench time!

Any chance?

Any chance that my valves could be so far out of adjustment that I can't build compression in 2 of my cylinders?

I've checked the oil and the coolant, neither one appears to be fouled up or otherwise mixing with each other.

So today I dumped a new battery in the ol gal cuz the other one was from 1995!!!!

I opened the valve cover and to my surprise the timing chain and everything look newish. The tensioner looks great and so do the guides.

What didnt look great was the valve clearances.... I had to double check I was at TDC because everythig in there was goofy. So after verifying TDC I worked the valve clearances into the right specs. Ran out of time since it got dark but she fired right up. Idle was very high so I adjusted that and she now just purrrrs.... well better than she used to! The motor doesnt bouce all over and she seems to have some power again.

Yay!

I'll do another compression check and see if it helped out!

I just bought an 85 for $300 because the guy had snapped the timing chain and didnt feel like fixing it after the new timing chain didnt get it start, $90 and a few hour later it had all new valves and was purring like a kittin as well... Glad your was an easier fix then mine lol...

Nice truck, always liked the Extra cab. Subscribed. Rebuilding isnt bad at all, just depending on how much time yo got to let it sit. I would plan on a good month. Seems like waiting on parts and machine work then getting it togther. I like this route just because I know what is in it.

If time is an issue, I would got for the rebuilt motor, but there you are taking achance on the rebuilder. You seem to trust this guy well, so then it would boil down to cost.

This is just my opinon so take it for what it is worth. But when it comes to head work, if you arent careful, you can spend as much in machine work as buying new head. I am able to get a new head for around $250. I learned this after having $210 of machine work done.

See how your compression check goes and you might just luck out. How many miles you have on your motor? I would let that have some deciding factor on it to some extent. Looking forward to your build.

Trimmy - Great score man, I'll be watching your build for ideas! I'm jealous... I paid a bit more than you for my truck haha

Terry - Thanks for the words of advice. I haven't got around to testing the compression yet but my guess from the way she is running is that I have fairly even compression, all at around 120ish psi. I can't wait to actually test it though, its the best indication of the motor and its driving me nuts! She has 167,000 miles as of this very morning.

I cleaned the wheels, I'll edit a pic in when I get home. I didn't realize that they were chrome!
I also cleaned out about 45 pounds of dirt and nasty long girl hair and crap/trash out of the cab. Wiped EVERYTHING down with disinfecting wipes because that ˟˟˟˟ was NASTY. Also fixed the passenger side "flippy" window.... what the hell is that thing called? I like to refer to it as my ball cooler, cuz it blows air right at my crotch. Perfect for a hot day.

Things to do before winter:
*I've got some shift linkage part that is loose underneath, I can hear it clanking around.
*Shocks are way beyond done, I'm not sure if they will help me much in the snow at this point.
*Previous owner had never heard of an alignment, apparently, I'll have to rotate tires so I have good ones up front and get it aligned. That should make it through winter, so spring time comes build time and new (bigger) tires!
*Adjust the parking brake properly, and fix the damn parking brake switch that turns off the dash light haha
*LOTS and LOTS more work that I'm not going to list out yet.

Timing job DONE! Drivelines woes....

So - I haven't posted anything in a long while, mostly because nothing happened with the truck at all.

I've finished doing a timing job on the truck and it went pretty well. Pictures and more info on the timing job itself to follow.... lets just say the hardest part was definately breaking loose the damn crankshaft bolt!!! THREE DAYS to pop it free haha
The 22re is a pretty neat little 4 banger for sure, and I feel a lot more confident in knowing what is going on under the hood now.

Now that I have been able to drive the truck more, and put some miles on it wihout fear of blowing the chain and valves/pistons etc.... I've got a LOT of notes/problems. I don't know if this is going to be worth my time and money or not. The truck's driveline may be worse that I thought!

When driving, the clutch apears to be engaging/disengaging properly. It doesn't slip at all and appears to be adjusted appropriately. I did replace the clutch master cylinder because of a visible leak, and after bleeding the system, the "normal" amount of pressure from the new cylinder seems to have blown out the slave cylinder, its now leaking... so I'll be replacing that too haha....

However, when changing gears, the driveline itself seems to have a lot of "slack". What I mean is during a gear shift, as the clutch is let back out there is a noticeable "slam" of sorts, which can be eased by feathering the clutch. I don't even know where to start looking for this problem - or more like multiple problems. Its bad enough that I think I will just have to stop driving it again until I start sorting it out. Suggestions?

Edit - forgot to add that the truck has HORRIBLE vibrations throughout it when hitting about 45-50 m.p.h. this is probably related to all the other driveline issues and what not, but worth mentioning. Its really loud and vibrates the whole truck!

The front axle is in need of some serious love. The knuckles are covered in miles and miles of caked on grease/mud/dirt etc... obviously the seals are leaking like crazy. Suggestions on how to do this? Is it worth it just paying a reputable shop to do it for me?
I really dislike the steering on this. What can I do to fix it? It looks like I'll smash the steering components on rocks and stuff if I take it out wheeling. Hi Steer kits (expensive?)? Homebrew hi steer?

The suspension is entirely shot, but thats okay because I will be replacing/upgrading just about everything there. Two leafs in the springs are broken. The leafs that are in tact are beyond flattened out lol. The bushings are rotted out and literally coming out on thier own. Not cool!
The shocks appear to be purely for looks... as in I don't think they are absorbing anything at all haha

The steering pump seems fine, though the resevoir seems kind of small to me? Its definately stock - it says "toyoda" on it and is very old looking lol. The pump is quiet and moves the wheels around well enough I suppose. Maybe a future upgrade is needed.

Sorry - I bet the majority of my problems have been covered (beaten to death) but I am just trying to log as much info as possible here!

Timing chain stuff

Here are some pics of what I went through in the timing chain job.

Got the timing cover off and the chain and tensioner and guides all looked okay. I don't have the means nor do I care to actually measure the chain lol, the new one from engnbldr was a great deal



So this is probably WHY the damn thing was leaking oil and everything was then caked in greasy dirt sludge. Whoever did this before cut off part of the head gasket that provides the seal for the top of the timing chain cover:
