On my '93 pickup (4cyl, 5 speed, 4wd) I have a button on the very left hand side of the dash under the A/C vent. it says:

CLUTCH
START
CANCEL

What is this button for? Sorry if it a dumb question but I did not get an owner's manual with the truck and have wondered what it is.

Tha button is used to start the motor without having to push the clutch to the floor first - just make sure you're not in gear, I've did that ONE time in my driveway and my truck jumped forward and almost hit my car.

I use it on the rare occasion that I stall the motor climbing up or down something and I can't take my foot off the brake to push the clutch in to restart the motor.

 

Dont push it!!! Just kidding. If on a hill and you are afraid of rolling back you can leave the clutch out and move the truck with the ignition. Not so great in hi range but works great in low range. It will start and just give gas to go.

Also great for just reaching in and not getting into the truck for starting, not its orginal purpose, but works great. Just make sure you are in neutral or you maybe chasing it down the street or into the side of the garage.

Pretty much the greatest thing ever put into a stick shift truck.

 

I would rather not have any sensors at all like an older car or truck where you dont have to press the clutch in at all

 

I read somewhere about that mod.... I am kinda with you but I have to stay street legal so i have to keep somethings on my truck

 

You can remove it an join the wires at that junction, no more push in clutch.

 

I see that being dangerous

 

True, I should probably put it back in. Or I could hide it somewhere accessible and use it as a anti theft feature.

Thanks everyone. That makes sense. I grew up driving a '78 Jeep and never had to push the clutch in to start it and it was never an issue. Kind of a cool feature though I am not sure how often I would use it. Now I know what it is I am almost tempted to by-pass it and go Old School.

 

I love my clutch start button. Its nice when you dont gotta get in your truck just to press a pedal then hop out.

 

I use mine everyday, in the morning when I warm up the truck and dont want to get in. It actually saved me wheeling, I was taking a bypass that had been washed out and was just wide enough for me to fit but then I started sliding down the 10 foot drop off, so I used my clutch cancel switch so I wouldnt slide down and kill myself and my truck when I let off the brake.

 

It maybe used to to get out of being stuck in the mud. The starter motor will give less wheel spinning torque and if the tires have enough grip it can pull the truck out. Also bumping the starter while timing the forward momentum can get help get the tires out if they are dug in. Forgot to mention that you may need to take the coil wire off to keep the engine from starting.

 

I used mine to load my truck on a trailer when my timing chain broke. Didn't go 100% smooth but it was a LOT easier than winching it up the trailer.

I also use mine almost every day in the winter.. Or when I'm doing simple adjustments in the garage (maybe not safe, but the parking brake is always set and I've never had the engine start and take off on me while it was in gear) and need to hear the engine run for a sec.

once upon a time, there was no "press clutch to start" for any manual trannys. around the early 80s i noticed japanese cars started adding the switch on the clutch as a safety issue. soon all cars had 'em. i don't know who implemented the change, govt. or insurance industry, but i'd bet japanese truck owners were the first to complain about it being a nuisance, so the cancel of the clutch safety was provided. this is conjecture of course.
