I have a 97 4runner and I was attempting to remove the stock trans cooler return line hose from the bottom of the radiator. (next to the drain cock) In doing so the entire 90 degree elbow pulled out of the radiator... I caught all of the coolant in a bucket and noted that the 90 degree elbow has threads and a rubber o ring on it. Could it be as simple as screwing this back into the radiator? or has it been damaged too much and time to buy a new radiator?

The last thing I want to do is screw this back in and end up with a milkshake because it was leaking down there. or that now this fitting will allow ATF and Coolant to mix.

Any help would be great.

I think you have two options. Assuming your radiator is good you could plug the trans cooler holes and use an external trans cooler or get a new radiator and use the built in trans cooler. I would not reuse the trans cooler the way it is. You are setting yourself up for a milkshake.

I just did my radiator swap and when i inspected the fittings for the trans cooler i noticed quite a bit of corrosion around where they thread in. I'm planning on take the radiator apart this weekend and seeing how bad it is.

 

Radiator or external cooler is a lot cheaper than a trans. play it safe.

yeah, I removed the radiator last night. There was a lot of corrosion and no way I would safely try to scrrew that one back in. I can get a used unit here for 60 bucks and will be putting it in. Low mileage. and working properly.

Are you sure that used unit is in good condition? For a bit more money I'd be safari and get a new radiator.

 

The used one is in. It was in good shape and very clean. No bent fins, or damage. Have had it in for 2 days. Cooling fine, no leaks, and I have checked the trans fluid for any signs of a milkshake starting. All is back to well.
