Time for a Head Gasket?

Ok, so I spent my last two days off doing some preventative maintenance on my 81' now it seems I created a problem. I replaced the worn out timing chain etc, front cover gaskets, water pump, oil pan gasket, belts, alternator (gm 100a), and installed my electric fan. I was a little worried about the timing setup but she started rite up and is running better than ever, BUT now I discovered an oil leak rite at the spot where the hidden bolt is. I did have a hard time getting the hidden bolt back in place because the head gasket was kinda covering the hole (Im thinking a layer of it folded under itself).

So now that I created this awesome oil leak im thinking I should just bite the bullet and replace the head gasket rather than pulling the timing cover back off only to confirm that the head gasket was damaged by the cover. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I could not agree with you more. Your going to have to bite the bullet and replace the head gasket. Go OEM with the Head Gasket from the dealer too.

It is almost impossible to replace the timing cover without crimping the HG. I've learned my lesson with that job...just do it right and remove the head. Less time and fuss in the long run.

Ok, thats what I figured, at least im not alone! I think I will pick up the felpro Head Gasket kit from rockauto then supplement it with an oem toyota head gasket. Unless the felpro HG is worth a damn...

I have done the same thing with the cover. I have seen it done without pulling the head.

Now I just pull the head, saves alot of trouble in the long run. You can get everything checked and cleaned up nice.
