Hey everyone. I have a 95 4Runner (that im completely in love with), its a 3.0, 5spd std, 4x4. A few weeks ago I swamped it pretty good in a big mud hole, ever since there is a hydraulic whine sound when the clutch pedal is pressed. The slave cyl isnt leaking, is the clutch master on the firewall driver side? If so it isnt leaking. Has anyone else experienced this problem before? Ive searched and searched, to no avail. Any input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the throwout bearing. Could be it got the lube washed out in the mud. The only fix is to replace it, and the clutch while you're there.

 

Thanks for the replies! I would have to seperate the tranny from the motor to look in the bell housing? I don't see any kind of inspection plate there. The throw out bearing has also been on my mind but, doesn't that only make noise if the clutch pedal is up? (not engaged)

Not neccesarily, you could have gotten some dirty water in the bearing and now you are hearing the sand/mud grind and drag between the balls in the bearing and the race.

Since it would be silly to drop the trans to replace the TO bearing and not the clutch while you're in there, I'd run it 'til she quit. You're looking at a clutch kit either way.

 

The throw out bearing is only under load when the pedal is pushed in, when the pedal is up it shouldn't be spinning.

And like fierohink said if you're replacing or even checking the bearing you might as well replace the clutch. If you can live with the noise drive it until the clutch needs replaced anyway, who knows the noise might even go away if it's just silt in the clutch.

 

It was the throwout bearing. There wasnt much left of it. Looks like my clutch was almost done too. The new clutch makes it seem like driving a whole new truck!
And just as fast as something is fixed something else is broke... I got stuck in traffic today and went to turn around and smoked the trans crossmember on a curb. One of these days I will quit doing stupid crap....

 

Hopefully pick n pull has a crossmember at a reasonable price. What will fit my 95 3.0L 4x4 5spd std? Would one from a 4cyl still work? Or auto trans?

I'm fairly certain you'd need a crossmember from a MT V6 4x4... but trucks and 4runners should be interchangeable in this regard.

That was my experience a couple of months ago, whilst driving through flood waters. had the whining sound for a few weeks afterward then it went away completely, with no change in the way the clutch worked.
