over heatting 85/ 22re

i have a 1985 toy truck 22re. nothing special all stock. 3 days ago it over heated out on the highway so i cranked up the heater and fried my feet. when i went through the little towns it seemed to cool without the heater on. so i got on here did some reading and ended up digging out the "aisin?" fan clutch from another 22r. the next morning it worked pretty good on the way home though temps rose just before hitting the drive. today i had to keep switching feet on the gas peddle do to the heater blowing on my steel toes. temps stayed high. red high. i had to stop 4 times and let her cool down. she was boiling badly.
i replaced the thermastat 3 days ago.
there are several factors that come to question.
i have a front exhuast pipe leak comming out of the pipes that bolt to the manifold. where is the temp sensor? on top of the thermastat houssing? could the excessive heat from the pipe be caussing something to over heat that isnt supposed to get heat to it?
it burns oil like there is no tommorow.
when the water pump takes its leap over the cliff does it do it slowly. i mean are there warning signs? will it pump the coolant slowly then jump? i spit in it only to realize i have no clue how fast the spit should disapear. it moved very very slow btw.
i dont think i have air bubbles.
the resivior is filled to the top. probably do to the over flowing boilling tank lol
if there is any advice please help.
im gonna try the string trick tommorow. i dont have any kite string though. will yarn work?

id change the waterpump just to be sure the stupid things tend to go out with no warning on 22res and then drain all ur antifreeze and see if its circulating if it is has to be something to do with the thermostat or possibly hg ive never been to good with that but does it look like u have exhaust coming out of your radiator when u take the cap off? btw welcome to yt

skaz i plan on looking into that. gonna scout out all the parts stores for a 2 stage tonight.
raddude your right on it. i really dont think that coolant was moving fast enough through the radiator. the pump is also on my list for replacement this weekend.

thanks guys.

conclusion

ok so i replaced the water pump, rerouted the return water line away from the exhaust leak that was blowing strait onto it. the thermastat was takin care of a week ago. so what it boils down to is clogged radiator. there are no bubbles in this radiator, so either i didnt run it long enough or i dont have a cracked head or blown head gasket. going to flush it this weekend. this truck did sit for 6 years.

update

put new radiator cap on her today. pressure seemed steady. temp didnt rise past half on idle for 45 minutes. did engine flush 2x's so total time this truck ran about 3 hours. temp got even better. so i pushed the throttle to 3grand for 15 minutes and it rose but no where near half way mark.

problem is.....my dumbass forgot to buy more antifreeze when buying the flush and cap on fri. real results will have to wait till monday or tuesday.

it was dirty as hell btw.

Does the truck act hot or is the gauge showing that it is hot? If the truck isn't boiling the water out, it may be a bad temp gauge or a bare wire shorting. also if you drive off road alot the raditor could have plugged cooling fins. You can take a air hose and blow it out and see if any seeds or dirt comes out. This is a common problem with the farm trucks where I work.

X3, .... I was overheating, ....replaced the water pump, it solved it for.... 2days, when it actually overheated to boiling again,..... replaced Radiator and voila, ...solved problem completely! Still ended up rebuilding anyhow because of compression and leaking like pig and, and, and, ...you get the pic. Now, a year later......rebuilding again(machinist from HELL!) lol.

If it's the radiator.... you'll need another one anyway(or re-rod this one) for the other motor, RIGHT? So why not get it going with another/repaired radiator and thennnnnnnnn do your swap, once you've got the cooling system issue figured out. Sure, could be a HG or Clogged H20 port in the motor... but why not be sure, first, ya know?

Best wishes,

Mark
