Looking at buying a used 4Runner; suggestions please

I am looking at getting a used 4runner for my wife. Believe it or not, she would like to drive a stick shift. I would like to buy one with a stock locker if possible. Please provide what years are preferential and what some of the trouble spots are. I am looking to spend between 10-20K.

Thanks everyone

Stick and E-locker? '96-'00. only years those two options came together. Otherwise, '00 and older for the possibility of manual trans. '96-'00 or '08+ for E-locker. No manual trans after 2000.

Hmm, Is it worth looking at getting an 00? I am sure that all the 00's have lots and lots of miles on them!

I really don't want to spend 30K on an 08+.

What is everyones take on the manual transmission in the 01+? I am thinking of an 03 or newer for my wife. The sport model that has the hood scoop.

What is more desirable/ reliable, the v6 or the v8?

Keep in mind I live in Colorado at high elevation. 7,000 feet plus.

No manual transmission, but an '03+ is a good choice for your wife. Obviously, you'll want 4WD being in CO, but a locker is not generally needed as the ATRAC system is very effective in most situations. Both the V6 & V8 have proven reliable and have decent power. The V8 has a full-time 4WD system, similar to LCs. The V6 can be run in 2- or 4-WD on dry pavement.

03+ Runners are built in Japan on fully boxed frames. Standard stability control, traction control, and 4-wheel ABS disc brakes. The V8 has more torque & tows more. The V6 gets better gas mileage. But if you can find one in good shape for a decent price that your wife likes I wouldn't really worry about the trim level or engine type – they're all comfortable, capable, and very reliable.
