A Few Questions for 3RZ Swappers/Experts..

In researching upgrades for my '85 SR5 5spd 4x4 w/ a tired 22RE it appears trying to get more power out of a 22RE is tough(without spending >$3-4,000 on a full build+turbo). Soo..a 3RZ seems the next most logical solution(and financial sense). From reading through the threads on here + Marlin's forum(mainly Big Mike's & Marlin's) it seems that wiring would be the biggest hurdle for me(and my main weakness). Two questions..

1. Have any of you used ToyOnlySwaps(or similar vendors) harness to simplify your swap? If so,how well did it work & if you had complications..how was their customer service? Not out to bash any vendor(s) here..just figure out who to spend my $$ with and do it right..the 1st time. Besides,I'm in grad. school(little free time) & need to K.I.S.S.

2. I have found a few 3RZ's of varying years. My Question is: will ECU's/harnesses of same gen. engines work for varying years(as long as they're in the same gen.) i.e. 1995-97. Example: 1995 T-100 2.7 + harness & 1997 ECU,evap can.,yada yada? Kinda newbish..but I'd rather ask now, than after I've bought parts. Thanks for whatever advice you can give! Sleepr71.

Regarding question #2, there are three main styles of 3RZ-FEs: Distributor with single coil, distributor-less with 2 coils, and distributor-less with 4 coils. You must keep the electronics and components unique to each style. Additionally, a distributor + 1 coil T100 3RZ uses entirely different electronics compared to a distributor + 1 coil Tacoma/4Runner 3RZ.

So as long as you keep the applications together, such as using any parts from a 1995-97 T100 for your 1995-97 T100 3RZ, they should work. Just don't start mixing stuff and you're be okay.

FYI you will LOVE the 3RZ. Please do NOT settle for a 2RZ. I just went to the MTA's Mud'N'Yer Eye frolic in Hollister, CA and I made 20 MPG on the freeway without drafting behind anyone, doing 65 MPH with 37" MTR tires. The 3RZ is more powerful than the Turbo 22R-TE and makes this great gas mileage. It's entirely worth the effort to swap!!

3RZ since 2004,
BigMike

Thanks for the reply Big Mike! It helps clear up what electronics works together & what won't(I had no idea that T100's & Taco's used different ecu's,etc.). I'm now leaning toward just getting a whole parts truck so that I know all the parts will be compatible. I still think you would be time & $$$ ahead buying a pre-made harness to join w/ the cab...not to mention keeping my sanity & getting the truck back on the road MUCH sooner.Sleepr71.
