can i swap a 1985 TOYOTA SUPRA 22R MOTOR to a 1988 pickup?
hey guys i have a 1988 toyota 4x4 pickup with a 2.4L FI turbo charged 4cyl in it. the question is can i swap it out for a 1985 toyota 22r supra motor and what would i need to get, in order to make the swap it's my first vehicle and the step-father wants nothing to do with it ... would the motor work fine with the stock manual, 4wd, transmission i have in it. the reason im wanting to do this is because i have a blown head gasket and they want a 1000 dollers (which i don't have) to fix it and my buddy has a 1985 supra which was wrecked in the rear but the engine is fine and he said i can buy it for 500... is the toyota pickup and toyota supra's 22r the same...many questions to ask... please give me some feed back...

Have you thought about just replacing the HG?
It's not that tough of a job. I'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather do the HG over swapping motors and dealing with all the wiring that is going to be different.
35 bucks + shipping from Engnbldr will get you the Headgasket Set. 35 bucks at a machine shop should get you your head cleaned, planed and pressure tested...and new valve stem seals installed (they come with the HG kit) ... atleast thats all we pay up here.
Thats under 100 bones, add in oil, oil filter etc.. another 100 for a timing chain kit and new front cover.. maybe 60 bucks for new oil pump/water pump cuz your in there.
So for 500 you get to refurb the motor you got, kinda.
for 1000 you could rebuild it.

I know this thread is 2 years old but id still like to know which supra had a 22r. I've had a 84 and two 85s and neither had a 22r. They were used in the celica but not the supra. Supras were the 5mge from 82-86.5 then the 7m series, then 1jz and 2jz.

When the Supra first debued it was another model of the Celica line. In 84 & 85 the Celica Gt, Gts and St had the 2.4 22r and 22re. Not to be confused with the Celica Supra which had the 5M-Ge. In 86 the Supra was a seperate model, it no longer had any affiliation with the Celica.
