Genuine parts or not??

As far as spark plugs, wires, cap& rotor and belts etc, is it recommended to use all genuine toyota parts?

It's for a '91 3L 4Runner !

I would use OEM plugs

cap/rotor/wires I would use aftermarket.

I have heard problems with plugs other than OEM due to the dual-diodes (or whatever they are called)

4000 miles ago I installed a Wells distributor cap and Niehoff rotor. My engine recently developed a terrible miss. I took off the distributor cap and rotor and they looked worse than the OEM one's that had 50,000 miles on them. I reinstalled the old OEM one's and truck runs great.

I think the OEM ignition stuff is better and seems to be the same price.

Use only OEM parts for this stuff. You will be happy that you did and you won't have to replace them later on because you are having problems (been there, done that). The Toyota quality is much better than the aftermarket stuff and it costs about the same.

We don't have dual electrodes on the 3.slow.

I have read many posts for various Toyota's (4Runner, Celica, Camry) that the OEM wires/cap/rotor are the best unless you are running insane power.

I try to stick to OEM stuff whenever possible, this includes belts and hoses.

Me too. I only use OEM parts. A little bit expensive sometimes but better performance for my rig.

Be ready for some serious sticker shock when you go to buy Genuine Toyota plug wires. 4 cyl applications are $70. V6 might be $90 or more. I went with Bosch Premium wires at $20 from AutoZone with a lifetime warantee. That extra $50 on my pocket feels great! I'll never have to pay for plug wires again either.

I think you are getting ripped off. For a 91 model, the 4cylinder wires list at $57.86 and the 6cylinder list at $68.39.

For the 6cylinder, 1st Toyota Parts has them discounted to $49.24.

$50ish is still too high for me. I can buy 2 sets of Bosch and still have $10 in my pocket. Genuine cant possibly be 2.5 times better. They aren't the cheapest skinny little wires you can get. They are the same gauge as Genuines. With dielectric grease the contact surfaces cover the same area.

I use Denso or NKG. I think Denso is the subcontractor that makes the Genuine plugs. Tons of Genuine parts are made by subcontractors. You are only paying for the word 'Toyota' on most smaller parts the dealer sells, oil filters, air filters, fuel filters, its a long list, none are actually made my the Toyota Motor Corporation.

I have had too many parts from Autozone, Pep Boys, etc that should have fit my Toyota but they were all just a little off.

I feel more comfortable that I am using parts that are made for my car, instead of aftermarket companies that try to make it fit more than one vehicle so they can save some overhead $.

Last tune-up I did was all from CHECKERS and no problems 4,000 miles later; as a matter of fact, my gas mileage improved, believe it or not.

However, I would recommend OEM for peace of mind in the future.

I was a little optimistic with running aftermarket parts but I couldn't afford to go OEM, but looks like I'm doing OK.
